We’re back home after nearly ten days away. Our time away with family was good, and it was wonderful for my kids to bond with their Albertan relatives. Calgary weather was the best I’ve ever seen it – warm and sunny every day. Not just warm, but really hot in fact. Hot and humid. In the past, I’ve enjoyed my break from the straightening iron when we visited Alberta because of the complete lack of humidity. This time, however, the air was as moist as the bathroom after a long shower, and my hair frizzy as usual.
During our stay in Calgary, we checked out Heritage Park (http://www.heritagepark.ca/home.htm), which resembles a small town way back when in the early days of the province. Horse drawn carriages, a livery, authentic old trains and the re-enactment of a gun fight between Wild Bill Hickock and the sheriff. My son was enthralled with the gun fight and enacted it over and over again, designating my daughter as the unwitting bad guy.
I enjoyed the shopping in Calgary – the boom of money and jobs has resulted in an ever-improving array of boutiques carrying the latest in clothes, home decor items, shoes, you name it. We checked out my favourite furniture stores on 11th Ave., Soho Nada (www.sohonada.com – it carries the spectacular Mitchell Gold line that only recently became available at Elte) and Kit (http://www.kitinterior.com/ – home to the fabulous Finnish brand, Marimekko, which is known for its bold colours and modern floral patterns). I love to browse in these beautiful shops, and gain inspiration from the gorgeous artifacts imported from all over.
