Bollywood Babes

April 18, 2011 by amreen

My girls love to dance.  They do tap and jazz at our neighbourhood dance school, and as of last year, they now do Bollywood dance.  They take classes with Sanskriti Arts, an amazing Toronto dance company run by Puja Amin.  Sanskriti runs classes for kids and adults all over the city, and the end of the season culminates in a big, colourful show that celebrates Bollywood dance in all its glory.

Every Friday night my girls join their friends (ranging in ages 3 to 8) for an hour of jumping, twisting and sashaying to Bollywood’s hottest tunes.  It’s seriously one the cutest things I have ever seen.  Their super instructor, Nirmala, has a way of connecting with them and even getting my naughty 3-year old to focus. Amazing!
This year, the ladies are dancing to this funky song from the film, Action Replay. Here’s the video for the song, featuring Aishwarya Rai and Akshay Kumar!

Nancy – I wish! every other day my kids come home wanting to do a new thing – lacrosse, glee club, track and field are the more recent requests, but i hit my quota a long time ago! not enough time or mommy-energy.
Cynthia – I think that’s a great idea: dancing together is such a great way to connect and make them really, really tired 🙂

    so fun.
Don’t you wish all our kids had 5 childhoods so that they could do everything that is offered?
I need the polka dot shirt.

Heather, Amina’s instructor told me that they are starting a Bollywood dance-aerobics class downtown – I will let you know when it starts, might be fun to try!
Tracey, you’re so right – it’s the perfect Friday night treat for the girls, and luckily for me, there’s a Starbucks down the street from the studio!

Oh, that sounds like so much fun, Amreen!! Everyone should have a dance party at the end of the week, no? My dancing daughter is going to LOVE this one!!
