Back to School’s Must Have Tech and Gadgets

September 19, 2011 by Jennifer

By now you’ve had a chance to tackle your kid’s back to school supply list, and you’ve probably noticed that it’s slightly more hi-tech than the “paper, pencils, binders” list of yore. Lists include USB flash drives, digital textbooks and webcams, but what are some of the hot new tech products that you may not have thought of for back to school? Let’s take a look…

I love this Kodak Playfull Video Camera for the high school set. It’s sleek and stylish (comes in 4 colours) and captures full HD video and 5MP stills. It comes equipped with Kodak’s Share button, so users can share memorable field trip and prom photos directly to Facebook, YouTube and Twitter.

I don’t know about your kids, but I have a really tough time denying my sons any book they request. I’m very aware of the challenges and benefits of “raising a reader”, and when we have trouble finding the latest novel in their favourite series at the library, I’m apt to shell out the $15 rather than risk them losing interest in it. That’s why an electronic reader seems to make sense for this set. The Kobo Touch has built-in WiFi, connecting you to over 2 million books. If kids have this packed in their bag, they can do some reading on the way to hockey games, waiting at the doctor’s office, and even on the school bus!

Worried about what the headphones that seem permanently attached to your kid’s ears are doing to their hearing? Encourage them to plug their mp3 players into little speakers so that they can listen from a little further away. If you provide some cute speakers like these from Pottery Barn Teens, they might even listen to you!

Finally, from Kindergarten crafts to Doctoral research, a good all-in-one printer is one thing every student needs. I’ve tested and loved the Kodak 2170 all-in-one for all my printing needs. This summer, the big project I undertook was scanning the kids’ artwork for posterity and it was up to even that challenge!

So while your students get cracking on their textbooks, you can get cracking on the supply list!

Love the little speakers! This way they can’t be with friends and all can listen while chatting.
