I am resuming my love/hate relationship with running.
I wrote a few different posts last year about my running that culminated into this one.
After October 15 of last year we kept running. For a few weeks.
It started to get cold and I was too much of a wuss to run in the cold.
Winter running is just gross. You start off cold, then get sweaty then get cold again. And being sweaty and cold? Just gross. Plus I could never master the appropriate layering techniques.
It was around the beginning of December that I decided to actually pull out my gym membership as opposed to merely using it as a monthly donation to GoodLife.
I was afraid to start running on the treadmill, worried that it would mess up my outside running. But I figured I had to keep moving.
What did mess up my outside running? Not running at all, which happened between January and March. No running. At all.

I tried an outdoor run 3 weeks ago and realized when I was too far from home that I was either going to vomit or pass out. It was also at that point that I realized that I needed to go back to intervals to get back to where I want to be. Where I want to be is running a comfortable 5k. That’s it. Just 5k.
My girls and I are back together after a winter break and we are determined to get back up there. Starting with intervals.
I challenged myself yesterday at the gym to do a full 5k on the treadmill to see just where I am.
FORTY THREE minutes?!? and a pace of 8’12?? Yikes. I wonder if I should recalibrate my chip??
I walked 3 times for 90 seconds. Initially I was annoyed with myself that it took so long but then I thought “Hell yes. I haven’t run 5k since December. Well done Irish!”
It’s a start.
I am confident that we’ll be running the Trek or Treat quite easily this year!

I HATE running but admire people that can and do. You all make it look so easy. I run like Phoebe from Friends.
Good for you Christine!

Well, that’s it! Time to put away the bag of chips and get back to it. Running, hmmmm…….no, not even if I’m being chased. But swimming is my love /hate workout.
It’s good motivation for summer.

Amazing! You can do it. I really admire you for going for it. And, like Amanda says, you do look great hitting those trails.
I understand why you wouldn’t run in the winter. I hate running so I can understand never doing it :). We all have to find what we love.
For me, it’s boot camp workouts. LOVE. Who da thunk it? And, skiing. Cross Country. I know!

Good for you!! You look great, hitting the trails!

I think that’s awesome! I’m glad you have such good running partners too- my downfall has always been that I don’t have accountability so I fall off the running wagon.
Julie says
you are going much faster than i am! 🙂 good for you!
Amreen says
Congratulations to you for starting again! i’m in a rut with my running, and you’ve inspired me to get back out there. I also can’t do winter running and don’t love the treadmill. It’s time!!

Way to go Christine…….Let me know if you ever need another running partner………getting my arse ready to start again, but need to take baby steps first. Keep it up!
Nancy says

you and me bit loving and hating it
let’s cheer each other on!
Tracey says
Yay for you, Christine!! You can do it. You can do it all, girl. Bravo!!

Good for you Christine.
My sister registered me for a half-marathon at the end of May as a Christmas present. I’ve tried intermittent outdoor training over the last few months, but this winter’s been a toughie, and I was really finding myself resenting my runs.
A few weeks ago I gave up the hope of being ready for the half-marathon, and decided to concentrate instead on finding my way back to enjoying running, and I’m well on my way there. After 3 outdoor runs this week I’m remembering how much I enjoy the time to myself, the energy from a great playlist, the feeling of satisfaction when it’s done and the extra spring I have in my step these days.

I just started exercising again after quitting ages ago.
I have to go it for my heart and my blood pressure and to kick my genetics in the arse.
I’m only a few weeks in…but I’m LOVING it. It makes me feel soooo good.

You are inspiring me, Christine! I am going to get out there tomorrow morning. Just gotta locate my running gear…
