When I was pregnant the first time around I was working with a magazine publishing company. They showered me with very nice gifts and complemented me on the way I looked…I knew that the added 55 lbs on short, little me — well, they were just being nice. I knew I was carrying a tank! And I craved pie-crust all the time..but that’s another story.
Anyway, one of the gifts I had received was a health book for pregnancy and baby. Actually, I had also received several hand-me-down advice books from my aunts, but the one I had received from my co-workers was the most useful one of them all.
And I still have it today.
I was also giving this book as baby shower gifts for a few years but it has since disappeared off the shelves. It was heartbreaking because I knew, like me, my friends were looking for something (anything) that would help navigate us in the hazy years of parenthood. It was always the most welcomed gift. But as mentioned, it’s gone.

Then, recently and out of the blue… I was sent the MAYO CLINIC GUIDE To Your Baby’s First Year for review.
You know when people say “I wish there was a manual that came with the baby?” This one is pretty darn good!
The MAYO CLINIC Guide to Your Baby’s First Year guides you from developing sleep schedules to identifying your baby’s temperament and learning to understand his or her special traits. It continues to cover baby’s health and safety and understanding the scheduled checkups and more.
Here are the sections:
Part 1: Caring for your baby
Part 2. Baby’s Health and Safety
Part 3: Growth and Development Month-by-Month
Part 4. Common Illnesses and Concerns
Part 5: Managing and Enjoying Parenthood
Part 6: Special Circumstances
Each section is broken down into detailed specifics from how to store breast milk properly and how to identify when an illness is serious to coping with preemies and dealing with baby blues. It really tackles many questions new parents would have.
Just flipping through the book I’ve been stopped at information like…
How to recognize stomach flu (gastroenteritus)?
Letting go of being perfect (as a parent) and tuning into your baby.
Understanding baby cries and how to comfort them.
What oral thrush, Impetigo, eczema, cradle cap and other common skin conditions look like (and what they are).
Breast feeding and bottle feeding tips.
…and so much more! This book really does cover a lot of ground!
The recently released book is written by doctors who are parents themselves. It’s current and full of very useful information and easy to use. If you’re pregnant go to your local bookstore and flip through the pages. And if you’re a friend of someone who’s pregnant this book will last longer than that onesie!
And it’s now on my list of very useful baby shower gifts to give!

I was provided with a copy of this book, but was not compensated in any way for this review. All opinions are my own.
