In Pursuit of Onederland
Ahhh…the elusive goal…to weigh less than 200 pounds…to be in ONEderland. I had a very mixed reaction to my-weigh in this week. I was pleased, on the one hand, to have lost 1.4 pounds, given that I’ve been on vacation and not exactly following my program. I was disappointed, on the other hand, to still weigh 201 pounds! I was really hoping that this would be my week to get into the "ones". Sigh. ‘Twas not to be.
I’ve found it to be a very delicate balancing act – and one I’m evidently not very good at – this being on vacation and trying to maintain a weight loss regimen. It’s about the 3 glasses of wine (one would have been a better choice) two nights in a row, and the hamburger and cupcake at a family barbecue. See, I know how to resist these foods when I’m at home: I simply don’t have them around! It’s not difficult to turn down a cupcake when there aren’t thirty of them sitting on a platter in the middle of the table! I guess I’ve learned that I have a good measure of self-control at the grocery store, but not at the picnic table!
In my defence, though, I have managed to show more restraint than I would have done in the past. And I’ve also managed to motivate myself to stay active during this vacation. Just yesterday I got up early and ran for 50 minutes with my sister – parts of it uphill and in the rain. Take that, Mr. Cupcake!
I guess I’ll just have to wait until next week’s weigh-in to find out for sure how bad the vacation damage has been – and probably another week after that until I can proudly say, "I’m in onederland!"

Stay the course, Kath!
When my sister-in-law came to live with us 3 years ago she had 235 lbs on her 5’1″ frame. She believed that “to diet” meant to eat “diet” labelled foods, but as much as one wanted.
With Canada’s Food Guide and walking as new lifestyle in our home, she lost 60 lbs in a year, and went on to lose another 30 by the end of the second year. Since she has moved into her own place, about 5 lbs is back on at the end of the 3rd year.
The secret is portion control, not denial. YOU MAY have a burger and cupcake, you just can’t have ALL of it.
If your target weight is 2/3 of your starting weight, just eat 2/3 portion of your “off-list yummy” as you would treat yourself without hesitation in your resized body.
No sense in fretting about “wasting” food on behalf of the hungry who are not to be found at your table. Serenity prayer.
