Ahhh, bagels. The humble O-shaped pastry is a staple in my pantry and bagels may grace my family’s plates for any of the three main daily meals (and, let’s face it, bagels make great snack foods, too). In my house, we can’t seem to get enough of these yummy bread circles, whether toasted, spread, sandwiched or even made-over into pizzas. So when I heard about National Bagel Day…well, I just had to get involved!
Did you know that according to Dempster’s® Bagel Barometer, six out of 10 Canadians eat bagels on a regular basis with nearly a quarter eating these circular delicacies daily or several times a week? That’s a significant amount of bagel-eating action going on nation-wide. And interestingly, all this bagel-noshery is not confined to breakfast-fare. According to their survey, there are four main types of bagel-lovers, with only the “energizer” type restricting their bagel fix to breakfast. In fact, nearly six out of 10 Canadian bagel fans fall into what they call “The Craver” category. Whether it’s a hankering for a bagel’s crunchy soft texture, to try something different or to satisfy hunger, the Craver chooses bagels to tantalize their taste buds. The remaining are in one of two camps: “Connoisseurs”, who take the time to create delicious new ways to enjoy their bagels, and “Purists” who eat bagels the same way every time. Count my kids in that last camp – for them it always has to be half a Dempster’s blueberry bagel toasted and spread with cream cheese. EVERY. TIME.
To celebrate National Bagel Day 2012 Dempster’s has launched a new bagel recipe and partnered with well-known Food Network chef and bagel fan Bob Blumer to: uncover Canada’s most passionate bagel-lovers and find out what an ultimate Canadian bagel’s defining qualities are. You may be surprised by the answers.
My first thought – Dempster’s has launched a new bagel recipe? We all know the old saying, “why mess with success?” Well, in this case the good news is Dempster’s has created their new recipe with Canadian taste buds in mind. They’re baked fresh daily in Canada and now available in grocery stores nationally. The new Dempster’s bagels start with premium, quality ingredients and natural flavours, and the result is a bagel perfect for toasting that’s crispy on the outside, yet stays soft and fluffy on the inside! Now that’s the way a bagel should be.
To help mark National Bagel Day, Dempster’s will be taking their new recipe on the road this February and March with their delectable Dempster’s Pop Up Bakery – a larger than life toaster – which will be making its way across the country to serve delicious samples to Canadians. Whether topped with cream cheese, butter, or jam, Dempster’s Bagels Toast Up Tour will offer a taste for everyone in markets including Toronto, Ottawa, Calgary, Winnipeg and Vancouver.

Dempster’s Bagels Recipes
Developed by Bob Blumer
Cheddar n’ apple
Everything you love about apple pie–without the guilt!
Ingredients:
- 1 Dempster’s cinnamon raisin bagel
- 1 Macintosh or Fuji apple–or whatever apple is available
- 1 tablespoon cinnamon sugar
- 1 tablespoon butter
- 1 ounce aged sharp cheddar cheese, sliced (ideally room temperature)
- 1 tablespoon toasted pecan pieces (optional)
Directions:
- Slice apple into 3/4 cm-thick slices and remove core.
- In a small bowl add apple slices and sprinkle with cinnamon sugar. Toss to coat evenly.
- In a frying pan over medium-high heat, add butter. When butter sizzles, add apples and cook for 2 minutes per side, or until they begin to soften and brown. Reserve.
- To serve, toast, and if you choose, lightly butter bagel. Top with cheese and apple slices, and sprinkle with pecan pieces.
Yield: 1 serving
Banh Mi Bagel 
A mash-up of Thai flavors and the traditional Vietnamese Banh Mi sandwich.
Ingredients:
- 1 Dempster’s sesame bagel
- ¼ of a fresh coconut, or 1/3 cup unsweetened shredded coconut
- 1 cup crunchy or smooth peanut butter
- 2 tablespoons freshly grated ginger
- ¼ – ¾ teaspoon red chili flakes
- 2 tablespoons lime juice
- 1/3 cup shredded purple, green or Napa cabbage
- 1 medium carrot, peeled and shredded
- 2 tablespoons fresh mint or cilantro leaves, finely chopped (optional)
Directions:
- If using fresh coconut, remove coconut from shell and use a veggie peeler to peel off the tough brown outer skin. Use the medium side of a grater to shred 1/3 cup.
- Add coconut to a medium bowl along with peanut butter, ginger, chili flakes and lime juice. Blend with a fork. Reserve.
- In a small bowl, toss cabbage, carrot and mint.
- To serve, toast, and if you choose, lightly butter bagel. Top with a generous spread of peanut butter mixture, and veggies.
- Remaining peanut butter spread will last in the fridge for 5 days in a tightly sealed container.
Yield: 1 serving + enough peanut butter spread for 3 additional servings

whip together some salted butter, and fresh minced garlic. Soften it and spread it generously on lightly toasted bagel, and put it in the oven for roughly 5 mins on 450
to make it even a little better, you can make mini “garlic butter crust” pizzas with shredded pizza mozzarella, pizza sauce and sliced or diced pepperettes. (great for kids! Mine love personalizing their own little pizzas!!)

It has been a few years but there was a bagel/sandwich shoppe where I used to live that made all their bagels in a fire clay oven. I would get their onion and poppyseed bagel, add on it the most amazing chicken salad (haven’t been able to replicate at home), top it off with some pickles, plain cukes and sprouts. It was great.

There isn’t anything that I haven’t had on my bagel. I made a tuna and cucumber bagel yesterday for my daughter’s lunch. She ate it and told me that it was so good! The fact that she ate it said it all 🙂

I love having an everything bagel with Grape Jelly. It sounds weird, but tastes very yummy. The Grape flavor brings out the onion flavor in the bagel. Just be careful that you don’t put too much on as it will drip and get all over you. (I need a bib) LOL
Either a plain or everything bagel, medium toasted with herb & garlic cream cheese on it or a plain bagel toasted with a slice of cheese, fried egg and a sausage round. Mmm!

We eat bagels more than sliced bread here. We eat them in so many ways, but I think my favourite breakfast bagel is one with cream cheese & peanut butter
I have two favs: cream cheese with strawberry jam on top and prosciutto & pickles. Or just make it into a crocque monsenieur: butter, mozzarella cheese, ham and broil it for 2-3 min.

I love bagels and have them a few times a week! I like them toasted with cream cheese and cucumbers or tomato, cheddar, and bacon with mayo! As a special treat take your bagel, spread cream cheese and sprinkle with garlic powder and place under broiler in your toaster oven, yum!

My favorite would have to be smoked salmon, cream cheese, red onion, pepper, lemon on a toasted sesame seed bagel! This is the ultimate! I will have this for brunch or lunch or dinner! Anytime!
