Sara’s post about privates, and a staff room convo, inspired me to write this post today.
Little kids like to be naked, it’s comfy and free. Sometimes they take off their clothes at socially unacceptable times. My girls love to be naked, they are learning when it is acceptable to be naked and when it is not (although we are a bit stuffy & puritan here in North America).
Today, a bunch of JK students all decided to change in their classroom (not at my school, or board, or province). They were having a water fun day and it was time to put on the dry clothes. One naked girl said to her teacher, who had arrived a little behind the students as she had to carry everything back inside by herself (in spite of a number of volunteers), “I see blah blah’s penis”. Well he can see your…..what? This led to a discussion of what to call a girl’s privates. I’ve heard front bum, hoo hoo, vagina, and pee pee.
My girls use the word vulva. Because it’s the correct word for the external genitalia and I thought it was important to use the right word. In my sex ed. class no one had heard that word before, they all used vagina (when they were using non-slang words).
Somehow, vajayjay doesn’t seem right.
So, what do you call “down there”? For girls or boys?

The boys have always called theirs a penis.
A while ago Eva asked why her penis was a crack (2 older brothers? yup). I held in my laughter and explained bits and pieces. I told her our/girls private parts are called a vulva but she calls it her front bum “because it looks a little bit like her back bum

We started with vulva but we were the only ones. It was confusing to everyone so we moved to vagina. It works.
