A couple of
weeks ago my 8 year old daughter Arielle started complaining of her ear hurting
where the piercing hole is. It looked
all red and I asked her how long it had been hurting. She told me a few days. When I touched the lobe
part it felt very swollen so I put some ear cleaner and alcohol on it and told
her she was not to wear any earrings until it cleared up.
Over the
next week she kept complaining and at one point she appeared slightly
hysterical and started yelling that she was pretty sure the backing of her
earring was stuck inside her ear. I
reassured her that I had never heard of such a thing and that I didn’t see how
that was even possible. I then went on to lecture her about how important it is
for her to take care of ears and that she was supposed to be cleaning them
every night. “This is why you now have
an infection young lady. You didn’t
clean them properly and then you kept changing your earrings all the time.”
Even though I was being quite the naggy bitchy mother she did agree that she
hadn’t been doing a very good job of keeping them clean, and promised she had learned
her lesson the hard way and would try to do a better job.
Her ear was
quite nasty and had quite a bit of puss coming out of the piercing hole, and the
other day I decided that if it continued like this over the long weekend she
would have to see the Doctor as it was quite possible that she needed some
antibiotics.
So there we were
last night starting what had become our nightly ritual of me inspecting and
cleaning her ears. I took her ear lobe
and squeezed it gently to see if there was still puss inside and holy shit the
craziest thing ever happened! As I gently squeezed out popped – you guessed it –
the earring backing! It scared the crap
out of me as it sprung into the palm of my hand!
Here is the backing:
Poor Arielle freaked a bit but then began
crying out in glee because she had been right all along! The poor girl! I felt
so bad, I had been lecturing her for two weeks and yet it was the plastic
backing lodged in her ear piercing hole the whole time.
Arielle had
a neon blue polly pocket purse come out in her diaper when she was a baby, a
polly pocket shoe stuck up in her nose when she was about 3 or 4, and now she
can add this to her repertoire of objects getting stuck in various body parts!
After the
shock wore off I realized just how dangerous these types of backings can be –
they are squishy and pretty small, and due to their clear color I didn’t see
anything at all in her ear hole! If it hadn’t come out when it did she could
have had some serious health issues.
What about
you? Have you ever heard of this
happening before?
Until next time
Chantel, momof8crazymonkeys.

If the picture is what it looks like, that is NOT an earring backing. It is a small clear stopper that is on many earrings when you buy them. It is at the end of the earring post, after the earring back, to stop the earrings from falling out of the card they are sold on. They are not meant to be worn. However, your warning is correct as other small earring backs can go into the ear lobe and cause infection. Thanks for sharing.

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.

Zune and iPod: Most people compare the Zune to the Touch, but after seeing how slim and surprisingly small and light it is, I consider it to be a rather unique hybrid that combines qualities of both the Touch and the Nano. It’s very colorful and lovely OLED screen is slightly smaller than the touch screen, but the player itself feels quite a bit smaller and lighter. It weighs about 2/3 as much, and is noticeably smaller in width and height, while being just a hair thicker.

You dont want to produce your possess item or assistance, you dont want to take care of the orders, you dont want to manage the client assistance and transport. In some circumstances, you dont even need to have your very own website. The only issue that you really should do is market the merchants items and/or services and make good commissions primarily based on the performed actions.

Holy Polly Pocket! That is too funny/scary
my youngest had the skin grow over her backing at 8 (YUCK) and then peirced again at 12 and her basketball coach made her remove them for each game for a season and we could not get them back in.
So now at 15 we are going to pierce them again! #$%^!

blowing over a child’s hurt is the worst feeling in the world! i saw it happen today…a 2 year old kept crying at the skating rink and the mother kept saying you’re okay, you’re okay and it wasn’t until 5 minutes later that they realized they snapped her chin in her helmet chinstrap. i did that once and felt like big crap!
it’s good to know about the earring backing…but when i got mine done the backings were the metal butterflies and i needed pliers to get that sucker off! glad it’s all fixed up for you. hugs!
chelsey says
ive never even seen backings like that are you sure they used the proper ones?
tammy says
Yes.. This can happen.. My sister had the same problem when she was small.. I’m very surprised that the doctor didn’t notice that.. Our family doctor looked at my sisters ear and had to make a small cut at the back of my sisters ear to remove the backing.. this is more commen then you may think.. that is why you must follow the care instuctions to the letter.
This can also mean that your childs body is having a reaction to the earring its self..

Tracey the weirdest part is I have no idea how it even got in! I am thinking maybe in her sleep it somehow got pushed in – thankfully her ear seems to be healing okay but I am not letting her put any earrings in yet.
Tracey says
Wow! I’ve never heard of such a thing… that’s bad. But I’m so glad you got it out! I hope she heals quickly, and that there are no lasting problems with the hole. Poor girl!!
