A friend and I took a quick trip to the mall last week in search of transitional tops, and were surprised to see that the stores have gone straight from winter’s woolies to Summer’s sleeveless and strappy. Whatever happened to Spring?
Well, the look is all about layering. Take a top or two or three and put them together in various combinations and volia! You have more new looks than you thought! And, more good news in these tight economic times, is that you’ll already have many of the essentiel pieces in your closet. Take this outfit from Esprit, for example – it’s simply a v-neck T topped by a colourful cardie. The pretty pendant and light denim, bring it bang up-to-date.
And what are the laws of layering? Hey, we’re Canadians, we’re used to layers, right? In fact, laws of winter layering, apply just as well to Spring. Namely, keep the layers light and make sure the layers underneath are as presentable as those on top, so that when things heat up, you can take pieces off, and still look and feel good. Note, the look above – the white T has some subtle ruching to add interest when the cardie comes off.
Here’s another example from Esprit, starting with the same white, long sleeved T. Don’t be afraid to add short sleeves over long, until the weather is warm enough to bare those limbs
And, when it comes to your workplace wardrobe, the same pieces can help you through the cool days of Spring until the heat of Summer. In this Banana Republic outfit below, the cardie goes corporate over a dress with the addition of a simple belt.
And, this lightweight suit, also from Banana Republic has tons of flexibility. Wear the pants with a crsip shirt or slim top without the jacket. Add the jacket to jeans to pull a casual look together.
When it comes to flattering Spring footwear, I would choose closed toes. Your ballet flats and espadrilles are still suitable for this Spring. If you need an update, here are a couple of new versions from Old Navy and Payless.
And it just wouldn’t be Spring without April showers. Treat yourself and your feet to some cheerful rubber boots, like this playful Payless pair, and go jump in the puddles with the kids. Because style isn’t only about looks – it’s about helping you live and enjoy your life!
