Back on the carpet I started wondering: with 3 very different musical groups, and 3 vastly different musical styles, how different would their answers be to the same question, “what advice do you have for new performers?”
The sultry Latina singer Amanda Martinez went first. “I would say that you have to go for it and really believe in yourself. And really I think that there are so many opportunities that you have to be open to them and take whatever moment you can.
“Social media today really gives artists an opportunity to put themselves out there without having to wait for a record label or someone to really discover them, so I think there’s so many great creative ways to put yourself on film and even with a small little iPhone and make sure people hear you.”
The Antiheroes, Sha Prince and Flex were next. I couldn’t quite figure out who was who and I think there were getting a bit annoyed at my continual asking. Regardless, their advice?
“You’ve just gotta get out there fast & quick, use everything you’ve got: get yourself on the internet, use twitter and Facebook, whatever you got, just be out there all the time. You really gotta be in people’s face and keep reminding them that your there. And don’t rely on anybody.
“CDs are on sale right now and t-shirts are coming.”
So is there a good hip hop pose?
“Nah, Hip Hop’s never really been about posing.”

Lastly, the girls from Magneta Lane.
“Stick to your guns. And know who you are before you get into it. Image is definitely important, but you should do it for yourself. Feel comfortable in what you’re wearing and what you’re doing. Human dignity and lip-gloss.”
