Luck and other gifts.

March 2, 2012 by Jen

When I was younger – pre-marriage, pre-kids – I didn’t take the time to travel. I was focused on having a career, a loving relationship, planning a family and establishing myself. I didn’t take a gap year or a summer backpacking through Europe. I didn’t even bother to take a break from my life long enough to take a few weeks roadtripping across Canada. I was focused on my goal – having a Grown-up Life.

I say that now with a touch of humour but at the time it was very serious to me. I wanted a career, to be married and to have a family. Why did I need anything else?

Ahhhh, the ignorance and naivety of youth.

Don’t get me wrong. I love my family and have a thrilling career. My life has been amazing. But, I do sometimes wonder why I was in such a hurry to leave behind the carefree life and become a responsible, independent adult. Obviously I romanticized the whole thing a bit.

But I have been lucky enough to have opportunities come may way at this stage in my life that I may have missed out on early on. In fact, these opportunities may be even better because I am now ready to truly experience them.

People will often say to me, “You’re so lucky!” And really, I am.

Today I leave for a whirlwind, exotic adventure in Dubai with two of my great girlfriends. Because of the type of work I do I get amazing opportunities and I am flexible enough to be able to take them. Is this luck? I’m not sure but whatever it is, I am grateful.

I am excited. I will be traveling to an amazing land I know little about. And I will be staying here:

Dining here:

Seeing the city like this:

And doing a little bit of this:

So, keep your eyes on these pages over the next few days as I travel half way across the world with two great friends and experience exotic adventures the likes of which I have never even imagined.

Yup, feeling a little lucky right now.

What would your dream destination be?
