So, I was inspired to write this post because there’s a slight Goonies obsession in our house right now, not unlike the obsession that existed in my house when I was 8. We watch The Goonies several times a week at our house, and when we are not watching the regular movie, we are watching the special feature version that has the cast commentary. The kids like that A LOT. Since the movie was made in the 80s (and still holds up, ps) they love to see how their favorite characters have grown up. And they like hearing all the inside scoop from the actors…especially when they point out all the mistakes.
The Goonies cast THEN, circa 1985:
The Goonies cast NOW, circa 2010:
WOW.
First of all, I just want to say, this makes me feel OLD.
Sean Astin, Mikey. Sean, of course, is still acting…most notably as Frodo’s trusted sidekick Sam Gamgee in the Lord of the Rings trilogy. He also voices the title character on Disney’s Special Agent Oso.
Corey Feldman, Mouth. Corey certainly didn’t disappear from the entertainment business post-Goonies, and went on to do many successful movies in the 80s and 90s. He is still acting, and is also the lead singer in a band called The Truth Movement.
Jeff Cohen, Chunk. After the Goonies, Jeff went on to take up high school football and lose his Chunk-iness. He didn’t do much acting after Goonies and went to to become an entertainment lawyer in Los Angeles.
Jonathan Ke Quan, Data. Ke learned tae kwon do on the set of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and went on to work as a stunt choreographer for X-Men and The One.
Josh Brolin, Brand. The Goonies was a big break for Josh, who is currently still acting and has won several acting awards for his roles in Milk and No Country for Old Men. He has been married to actress Diane Lane since 2004.
Kerri Green, Andy. Kerri did some acting after The Goonies, but took a break to study art at Vassar College. She does still occasionally show up in an Indie movie here and there.
Martha Plimpton, Stef. Acting is in Martha’s famous blood (she’s the daughter of Keith Carradine and the niece of Robert and David Carradine), and she continued to do movies after the Goonies. She found her real love on the stage. And she currently plays the role of Virginia Chance on the sitcom Raising Hope.
Tracey says
Um, I cannot tell you how many times I’ve seen this movie. 6 times in the theatre, at least, and then we owned it on VHS… my sister and I STILL quote from that movie on a weekly basis, I’ll bet. Yeah. We pwn Goonies. Totally.
PS – I’m so thrilled at how Martha Plimpton is still acting all over the place, including stage (which is where she totally belongs because she’s so awesome) and did you catch her in “How To Make it in America” on HBO? She’s full of The Awesome. Swooooon.
