It’s going to be a very quiet Christmas in our household. We’ll do the morning thing with my dad and step-mom but then it’s just the boy and I for Christmas Eve and Christmas Night. At first..*sniff* I was sad…but now, I’ve decided – it’s turkey breast, mashed potatoes, stove top….and some movies. I’m hoping that his LeapPad will keep him occupied so I can fit a bunch in.
I’m not talking Elf or A Christmas Story or It’s a Wonderful Life. Nope – cheesy Christmas chick flicks. Here are my top five …..
5. Bridget Jones’s Diary
Ugh! All embedding disabled! Boo! But come on…Mark Darcy’s Christmas sweater? The reindeer…so good.
4. Step-Mom
Okay so I won’t be watching this this year. I’ve decided I must never watch it again to save myself from getting more eye creases from crying. So here – Merry Christmas…will someone make me a cape please?
3. Serendipity
Please. It’s Cusack. It’s New York. It’s Aidan (well as a Yanni like musician) It’s a no-brainer! And it’s made me realize that my dream job is to write obits. I’m not kidding.
2. The Family Stone
This is what I’ll be watching on Christmas night. Again – the ending kills me like Step-Mom but the rest is so good…every part of it. Because you know what? I have a freak flag too…and I’m going to fly it more this coming year!
1. Love Actually
Yup. I’ll be wrapping gifts on Christmas Eve and watching this. Come on over. I’ll have popcorn and wine. Duh??
What’s your favourite Christmas chick flick??? And should I pour you a glass on the 24th??
Kath says
Sara, I don’t think I could endure Stepmom – like Julie I was bawling and couldn’t even watch the whole clip! But Bridget Jones and Love Actually – YES! I have already watched Love Actually about five times this year, and will def. watch BJ again too. Will have to try Family Stone…looks good!
We mustn’t forget The Sound of Music. I don’t know why it’s considered such a Christmas movie, but it is. I’ve already seen it once this year and will again.
And yes, tbay mom…I watched Steel Magnolias the other day. It was the first time my 11 yo daughter saw it and she loved it too. Stands the test of time, that one.
Great list!
Tania says
My favourite is Serendipity and in a close second, Sleepless in Seattle. What about Steel Magnolias?
Erin Little says
LOVE those movies (haven’t watched Step-Mom though).
Hmm, Wizard of Oz. The claymation movies with the kids: Rudolf, Frosty, etc.
I like When Harry Met Sally. It had a place in my life, like Friends did.
Christine says
So.
I’m just gonna go ahead and admit that the only one of these movies I have seen is Step-Mom.
it’s true…

The opening scene of Bridget Jones and the moment of the dramatic leg kick to “All by Myself” gets me giggling every single time. It may be the best movie opener ever.
One I’d like to add is “The Family Man”…. I choose us… sigh
I have it if you need to borrow it.
Christmas Day eve we can come visit you for a chick flick if your open door policy is still in effect.

I am sorry but I have watched Christmas Vacation twice alaready this season! Who doesn’t love Clarke Griswold? My Family Stone will be watching Family Stone, I can feel it. Then usually boxing day it turns into a John Hughes marathon! LOVE! Happy Holidays ya’ll
Sarah says
I ADORE Serendipity and The Family Stone. They always come on W Network during the holidays and I torture the husband by making him watch them. I guess that’s our holiday tradition?
Annabelle says
Sara–
Sorry for the typos in my post. And I wasn’t even drinking wine yet. Still laughing!
Julie says
never seen stepmom and won’t now since two minutes in i couldn’t stop bawling. i think i’ve seen enough! 🙂
can’t wait to see xmas vaycay..
snikks says
I know it isn’t a Christmas movie, but our tradition was ALWAYS Wizard of OZ!
Racheal says
How could I forget The Holiday -the worst movie I actually own- and my Mom’s favorite, When Harry Met Sally?
Sara says
Loooooove Meet Me In St Louis – I may need to pull that one out this xmas….
Racheal says
Love, Actually is a given. But also always do White Christmas and Meet Me In St Louis, (both chick flicks before they were labeled that way!)
Sara says
Annabelle – I’m howling…I was thinking ‘wow I don’t remember the Gunners in Serendipity’… Cayla – great call on Home for the Holidays! Forgot about that one. Grumble…really? You haven’t seen it? I swear to god – (as my sister once said) – I could have paid, watched the opening credits and left happy right after. It really is such a well done movie (EXCEPT the Laura Linney story line…it bugged me…)
Cayla says
I agree with Love Actually and Serendipity but just not a Family Stone Fan. LOVE Home for the Holidays with Holly Hunter and Robert Downey, Jr. Really, its a Thanksgiving movie…but still.
Annabelle says
I meant to say “January Rain” by David Gray. Duh… A little different than Guns and Roses..
Tracey says
GREAT picks, lady. I’ve seen them all about four hundred times each, except for Love Actually… I have yet to see it. (The shame! I KNOW!!) But, it wasn’t for any reason in particular… I WILL watch it this year. Fo’ sho’!!
I’d come hang with you if I could… here’s hoping the leapfrog will give you hours of uninterrupted chick-flick time. *clinks glasses with you*
Annabelle says
Oh yes, “Serendipity”…lovely. I have the soundtrack too. November Rain song makes me. cry. I wish Aidan didn’t look so odd in the movie…that who Yanni video scene was icky. “Sleepless in Seattle” is a good one at Christmas too.
