Toddlers and preschoolers need vocabulary – and what better place to start expanding it than in books about the world around them?
Picture My World (ISBN: 978 1 92697 356 2)
A Day At School (ISBN: 978 1 92697 395 1)
by Severine Cordier and Cynthia Lacroix, OwlKids
There are a handful of these simple little books for wee kids by this pair, and these two new ones are just as charming as the others. The first is the same format as the earlier Picture My Day, and like that title, illustrates lots of familiar, everyday scenarios from the world of little guys, from cloudwatching to park adventures to feeling sick.
A Day At School follows much the same format as well, highlighting typical little moments from throughout a day, from getting ready in the morning right to getting ready for the next day at bedtime. It is a little more targeted, and including a few pages full of small things like favourite snacks or backpack contents, but has much the same sort of little details to pore over and recognize, as well as the associated words to learn and talk about.
These are lovely little books for young people, and I see the second as a great gift for a child who may have just started school or be starting next year, as it would be a nice jumping-off point for talking about school and their experiences or expectations.
