You know that phase where kids love gross stuff? This new series aims to harness that love and use it to get them to learn something – genius!
Disgusting Critters
The Worm (978 1 77049 633 0)
The Fly (978 1 77049 636 1)
Elise Gravel, Tundra Books
Both flies and worms are, you must admit, a little disgusting. They are also interesting and extremely plentiful, so kids are sure to run into them, so it’s not a bad place to start in learning about bugs and the other various creatures all around us. The critters introduce themselves in these simply-written, easy-to-read books, and the contents are true, but less focused on facts and numbers than the sort of books written for school projects. These are strictly for the sake of interest, and the cartoony illustrations add to the appeal. For those kids who are fascinated by the things they find under rocks and thrill to the revolting, these are a perfect way to get them reading something they’ll love. You just may have to be resigned to hearing about how flies eat poo… (don’t say I didn’t warn you!)
