Grey Is The New Crack

April 13, 2012 by Tracey

This title: Fifty Shades of Grey has been floating around in my sphere for a long while, and I thought I’d eventually check it out, until the other night when one of my foxes told me to read it. Implored, is more like it. She thrust her Kindle at me and said, “Just take it. Let me know when you finish reading it. Go. Now.”

And so I wandered home from her place some time after 11 PM, and started reading before bed. I finally turned the lights out nine chapters later at 2:15 AM.

Oh dear.

In the morning, I did what anyone in my shoes would do: I packed my kids off to school, returned home and made a pot of coffee, hunkered down with a crap load of Easter chocolates and with my friend’s precious Kindle. For the rest of the day.
I finished it less than 24 hours after I started it. I’m nearly done with book number two, and so far, I have no firm plans to leave my house this weekend. Nor my couch.
Listen, this series isn’t going to win any literary prizes – frankly, the writing is terrible, and in lots of places it’s downright lazy – but it’s just some simple titillation. It’s springtime, don’tcha know.  And it’s not offensive – at least, not to me – but then, you know how I am. (Heh.) Many might find it… surprising. I liken it to the Twilight series (almost exactly) only with all the sex in it this time, hallelujah. And it’s of the kinky variety. The anticipation actually makes you tense when you read it… you might need a smoke afterwards.
Maybe a tissue, too.   ๐Ÿ˜‰
PS – Please don’t say the words “mommy porn” to me. That kind of ridiculous terminology needs to disappear. Like Laters, baby.
What was the last book you read that you couldn’t put down?

    I AM on book three.
    They remind me of Twilight without the supernatural. Insipid, indecisive female lead character. Seemingly strong but really insipid, but very domineering, ridiculously handsome male lead character.
    The plot is all about the negotiation between the bossy man and the girl who doubts herself – why does he love me? The girls who doesn’t realize how attractive she is.
    Why do we like these stories? This could be a Master’s thesis in Women’s Studies.
    OY.

    Hee! Told ya.
    And yes – I seriously wanted to punch that girl pretty early into the first book, but oy… you just can’t stop.
    I know. I know. ๐Ÿ˜‰

    Dude, I am so tired thanks to you! I’m not on book three. The first one was the best. Ana gets more and more tiresome as the series progresses and if I read “Jeez” one more time I will scream.
    However, I can’t stop reading. They are so bad, yet so good.

    Is there any bigger turn off than the term “mommy porn”? It’s like mom jeans. Doing it. In percale.
    {shudders}
    I digress. Just picked up the book ;0)

    I just started reading it. My eyebrows may never come back down from my hair line, ever again. It’s horribly written, for sure. But also pretty good >:-}

    In my opinion, Carol, it’s not just about sex at all. But, I can’t pretend this book is more than what it really is – it’s a steamy romp – better than Harlequin (which have never been interesting to me) but like I said – more like Twilight, but with the sex.
    It’s one of my favourite subjects… in this case, it’s complicated. But, it’s not told from the “complicated relationships” aspect, if that makes any sense… I wish it had been better in that way. Still, I think about the guts of this story a lot. Without giving a whole bunch away, there’s issue with unconditional love and trust… I wish it was more highbrow, but it ain’t.
    It’s still worth a read though. Don’t be skairt!!

    Wow this was exactly my experience. I could not put it down. I was up till 2:30am. I agree it’s not well written but man-oh-man is it hot. And yes I needed a tissue at the endโ€ฆ for the tears

    All my friends are reading the novel. And yes, they are calling it “mommy porn”. Tracey answer me this question…is the book only about sex or is there more to it?
