Remember these Valentines??

February 14, 2013 by Sara

I have an amazing memory box.  It’s filled with all kinds of things from grade four right on up to my thirties.  I’m not sure why some things were saved and others weren’t but at least once a year I pull it out and howl (and cry) at the contents.  Before my mom died, she pulled out a few things to add that she had saved, my high school diary being one.  Oh the drama.  It’s a treasure.

Other random contents?
  • flags from the pins at several Etobicoke golf courses – love gifts from a boyfriend.  Huh?
  • letters from a sweet Irish boy I met in Greece in my 30’s.  Yes only I pick up on vacation and stay in touch.
  • coasters from a wine bar in Quebec City where I spent four days drinking instead of skiing in high school

vd day blank.jpgMy other favourite content? Random lollipop slips from Valentine’s Day all through high school.  I will NEVER toss these.  They bring back so many emotions.  That panic of ‘will I get any’ or the pounding heart that this blank one brought me.  Could it be from that guy that I was secretly in love with?  Cue the imagination and I likely had our life together planned in about 10 minutes.  To me, it brings back memories of innocent times.  Times where the biggest decision I had to make was whether to skip class or not.

The other things these little pink slips remind me of?  I have always been surrounded by the love of the most kick ass friends.  Of the 40 or so slips I saved, I’m still friends with the vast majority of these people.  People like….
vd - ricky d1.jpg
Ricky D – three daughters and an amazing wife.  And after 30 years of being friends, he can still make me feel like a supermodel.
vd cath.jpg
Cath – future University roommate. She lives in Calgary now but and we don’t talk that often but it doesn’t matter. She’s still Cath. And this makes me laugh every time I see it because we still talk to each other the same way!
vday - carl.jpg
Carl – notice the ‘don’t get grumpy’ line there.  I had a reputation even in high school!
vday - lynn.jpg
Lynn? Probably the person from high school I hated losing touch with the most.  Thank you Facebook and that was remedied.  Now I can see how she tortures her kids with our Breakfast Club knowledge and awesome musical taste.
So? What’s my point?  As is so often the case, I’m not sure that I have one.  Maybe instead of spending the day reflecting on my last decade or so of singleness, my memory box reminds me that I’ve had a life filled with love.  And laughs.  And adventures. And such amazing, amazing friends.  That’s what I’m going to think about today.
Now send me some lollipops people!!!!

Those high school V-day scenes were days of dread for me… but like Julie, fortunately I had some lovely girlfriends who never let me feel left out. The details have been vaporized from my memory, I’m sure. *snort*

Charlotte has her first one of these Valentine’s day…only it’s carnations and not loli’s. I hope she gets some, and not from boys yet!!!
I asked her what if she didn’t get any…but she “knows” she getting some from her girlfriends!
I still have roses in my old year books with cards from the past!
