We’re coming up on Father’s Day. I just got through Mother’s Day and on we go to the next ‘holiday’. I anticipate Father’s Day getting more and more challenging as the years go on. I’m mentally preparing for the questions. ‘Scotty has a dad, why don’t I have a dad?’ or ‘Where is my dad?’. I want to have an answer ready for when he’s a surly teenager and yells at me in a hormonal rage – ‘Why did you do this to me?!?’. (I’m guessing my answer will depend on the moment – either ‘because I wanted you sooo badly’ or ‘f%#k if I know!’
After this weekend my mind is at rest though. He’s pretty on the ball right now!
Will and I were driving to my sister’s place on Sunday listening to a Winnie The Pooh story on the cd player. All of a sudden, it got really quiet. The verbal diarrhea of questions had stopped. This means one of two things. He’s either sleeping or his brain is going.
All of a sudden, I hear this. “MOM. MOM. Hey Mom – Roo is just like me. He doesn’t have a dad either. And you are just like Kanga. We are like Kanga and Roo. It’s so cool.”
Know what? It is really cool. Bring on Father’s Day! We got it covered!

I’ll bet he’ll never utter such things to you in anger – this will always be his normal life, and all families are different from one another. You’ve got this – fo’ sho’!!
