This month’s Urban Mom is Carolyn MacKenzie, local news anchor for The Morning Show and mother of two.
Occupation: Anchor for Global News Toronto’s The Morning Show
Hometown: Toronto
Current Town: Toronto
Waking up at 3:45 am doesn’t seem ideal, but for Carolyn MacKenzie it’s the norm. As an anchor for The Morning Show, MacKenzie juggles her career and home life like a pro. She’s got two kids, Kate and Matthew, who she likes to be home with after school. And despite those early morning work hours, MacKenzie says she’s pretty close to ‘having it all.’
“I go to a job I love and return home to a family I adore. I don’t really need much more than that.”
When asked if there was anything she’d do differently with her career, MacKenzie answered, “While I’m tempted to say, reach higher and think bigger, at the same time, the mom in me fears that by doing so, something would have to give and there’s no way I would want my family to pay for the price of ambition.”
While honouring her role as a mother, MacKenzie is still able to fulfill her professional goals. She finds being the local news anchor rewarding and shares that the best part of her job is “meeting new people and hearing their stories.” MacKenzie has covered stories all through the GTA and Canada over her extensive journalism career, including the Air France crash, the Queen’s Jubilee, and a series on transit inaccessibility, among many others.
Besides her extensive journalism work, MacKenzie also works closely with charities such as the Juvenile Diabetes, Microskills, March of Dimes, and Children’s Wish. She tries to work with charities that she can really connect with, so that her involvement is more personal and she can relate to those impacted.
Maintaining a balance between life and work has a lot to do with her supportive family. She notes, “the kids remind you when work is tipping the scale.” Her desire to always have time for her children ensures work doesn’t overrun her. Remaining tuned into the family and having an “amazing husband” help keep this mom happily afloat.
As MacKenzie shares about loving her role as a mom, we’re filled with all the warm-fuzzy feelings. She says, “There was never a time when I didn’t want to be a mother. I always knew I wanted children and now that I have them, a perfect Friday night is spending it with my husband and kids.”
