I was a bit of that crazy ‘every moment is a teachable moment’ mom with a fat Webster’s Dictionary on our breakfast table every morning when my kids were little. We would discuss a word a day. I would write it on this little blackboard and then we would talk about what it means.
Confession: We never did anything ever with numbers. Or hardly ever . Except I made a multiplication table once for them (and I still always stumble over 7×8 and resent the way it never changes) There you go. Cause and effect.
One day I came downstairs and sassy pants, age 4, was drawing on the blackboard and I said “Honey, what are you drawing?”
And she said ” Mommy, I am letting the cat out of the bag” And I swear she winked at me. (We had never discussed this expression).
I was so amazed that she was using an idiomatic expression and understanding it that I almost cried.
I said “Hold still, I have to take your picture beside the blackboard”
So I apologize for sharing something like this but it is my scrapbook blog and I can’t forget this. And seriously it might make up for the bad hairdo I gave her that day.
Grumble Girl says
Cutie pie… and, whaaaat? Her hairdo is adorable!
