Yesterday one of my favourite little artists was collecting sequins off the art table, like nuts to a squirrel in fall, while we were creating this
I caught her eye and she looked a little guilty. I smiled and said – ‘don’t worry, you can take a pocketful home’
She looked so excited. Treasures for a 5 year old.
This girl has a wonderful family and an incredible life. And yet this is terribly exciting.
It reminded me of a time when my oldest was 5 and just before dinner on a very hot day after school she asked me if she and her sister could run through the sprinkler. I turned it on and brought out ice cream sandwiches. They squeeled with delight. She said ” Momma, you are spoiling us!”
I laughed and never forgot this. It was the shiver of cold water on a hot day combined with dessert before dinner. It was more than they could stand.
I have never really forgotten this moment. When you give little people too much and they are raised on excess it seems to kill off their innate love of the very simplest things. None of us want to rob them of that.
Tracey says
Dessert before dinner… you are the BEST mom EVER!! (I love giving in like that sometimes too… though yes, I’m against “excess”, too.)
