Suddenly – it seems like out of nowhere, this is happening:
There’s a lot going on with my girl lately. Two wheeling on her bike…now reading.
Just waiting for her teeth to start wiggling. Ugh…
The bike riding was really exciting.
The reading is a relief.
I have three readers. Cam is an avid reader – a real book worm who reads every night in bed.
Cuyler is not a book worm. He does not enjoy reading, but he can read. It’s more functional for him than anything but he does still enjoy Dr. Suess (really, who doesn’t??) because they’re just fun to read.
I think Eva will be like Cam. She always wants books read to her and we always oblige. Lately – she’s the one doing the reading and it’s pretty awesome.
I have had a rule implemented ever since Cam was in kindergarten – I will always say yes to a book.
Toys no – you don’t need any more.
Books yes – you can never have enough!
I hope the same will be true for my kids. I’m afraid their generation is going to miss out on some really good reading adventures because of the technology saturation. I can’t even read on an e-reader – I need a book in my hands, turning paper pages.
I guess all I can do is model a love of reading and continue to say yes each and every time they ask for a new book.

I’ve always been an avid reader and have read to my kids since they were tiny. Both are now excellent readers, and we still enjoy family reading time before bed. Both of them always have one or two novels they are reading themselves on the go too. Unfortunately, they take after me and prefer new books to library books! And like you Christine, I hate to say no!

My kids hate to read!!! It drives me crazy…why…I also hated to read when I was younger. Even now it is only once in awhile that I finish a book. It is definitely my double standard, I don’t want to do it, but I am constantly telling my kids to read more….
Can’t figure this one out!!!

We LOVE LOVE LOVE to read. My Missy is constantly bringing me books to read. We just started an Amelia Bedelia book last night (she’s 3.5 yrs old). There are some books that we have read so often, she now knows the words by heart & “reads” them to me.
Her older half sister is the opposite. Doesn’t want to read, doesn’t want to be read to, and unfortunately she’s almost 7. She has been accepted in to the “reading recovery” program & is doing some better, but she still struggles and that makes me sad because reading is always such a wonderful adventure.
