Our little Madame turned five about a week ago, and I haven’t felt terribly rushed about writing a birthday post about it all, since we’re good at s t r e t c h i n g things out. We don’t just celebrate the day, but around these parts, we’re big on savouring the all the birthday time, slurping it up, and licking it all off our fingers, like the last of the frosting on cupcakes baked in festive paper liners, and using the party napkins for everything we eat all week long…
We took the little skinheads bowling again, which was as much fun as last year, only they were even better at it this time around. It was still a riot, this bevy of cute little kids, all thrilled with each other whenever someone knocked a pin down… no matter how long it took for the ball to get to the end of the lane.
Teeny tiny bowling shoes are really just the cutest things ever.
Last week was also the COLDEST week in the world, so we spend a lot of time indoors as the birthday lingered. We visited with family, and opened presents over a few days, and ate sushi (her favourite) and baked cakes and things. We ate candy, and told stories about her birth. And we weighed her, and we marked her growth in the doorway of the bedroom closet, like we always do. And we cuddled, and we sang songs. And we danced, and we laughed…
She is five.
(One of my darling foxes snapped this cool pic – thank you, BD!!)
What a sweet and thoughtful little soul she is. She is headstrong and determined – charms that drive me crazy sometimes, and probably always will in some ways, but I know these traits will serve her well as she grows, and the edges will soften with time. My favourite is that she still laughs with her head thrown way back, with her eyes closed. She explodes into a fit of laughter at the drop of a hat… If that isn’t pure joy, then I don’t know what is.
Still actively princessing…
… and sunglasses-ing…
… and loving all the things from the sugar food-group…
…but mostly still stylin’. ‘Coz she’s cool like dat.
It’s been really interesting, looking over all her pictures from the last year. She’s a little girl – fully and completely. Outside of the thumb-sucking, there’s nary a trace of baby left in her now. It took no time at all, it seems. *sniff*
She said, will you take my picture today? Which I did, of course, on January 21st. My little birthday girl – one whole hand old.
I will not correct you saying “sun scream” or “adocado” because it’s all over after that. I confess that sometimes I wish you would stop growing… I love that you said, “I fink about stuff deep inside my imagination, because that’s where my dreams come out of.”
Dream on, my darling girl. Get all you want.
le=”text-align: center;”>You have our hearts, for certain.

Such a doll! I love my boys but your daughter truly makes me want a girl and I haven’t even met her!! Oh, and thank the Lord someone else understands the “skinheads bowling” line. I have used that in my hood many times over the years only to be stared at like I was a looney.
