Nearly Five.

January 15, 2013 by Tracey

She keeps punctuating many of our conversations with, “I’m going to be five soon, you know…” As if it was a threat. It’s been this way for months.

And on the days when I’m really taking in our conversations (unlike the one when I’m just smiling and nodding, yes my darling) I notice how much she’s changed. I hear it in her little voice, becoming a bit less, well, wee. She is growing.
Her explanations on all things (complete with hand gestures and head-tilts) make me laugh. She recites short poems that she learns at school to me, and they always end with a smile and a little bow. She wants to wear nailpolish. We decide that the palest blush pink is the best choice for her. The sparkly lip gloss from a lootbag she got once is for at-home wearing only.
I overhear her talking with her friends, and her generous spirit gives me confidence that she’s kind-hearted and generous. I hope it never changes.
Jed: That granola bar was really good.
She: Oh, they are good. Did you like the petite marshmallows in that one? AND they have chocolate chips. They’re my favourite.
Jed: Yeah, it was delicious.
She: Well, it was the last one, so I’m so glad you liked it. Next time we can try the ones with the chocolate on the outside. I think you’ll love those ones.
But no matter what interests of hers wax and wane, she is forever uttering things like, “Do you mind if I put on a skirt for a little while?” Or, “Just to let you know, I’ll be wearing this dress for the rest of the evening.” And I find her lounging about the house like this, just chillaxing:

My goodness, but it’s great to be small…
