My seven year old has been coming home from playdates and camp days, telling me about some cool new thing he wants/needs/must have. Yes, we’ve just entered this phase. I don’t buy my kids a lot of stuff, just out of nowhere, and I rarely take them into toystores, because there just aren’t enough drugs in the world to make me endure the kind of hell that is toy shopping for another kid’s birthday WITH MY OWN KID by my side. The whinging. The crying. The tears. Oy, no thank you. Just shoot me instead.
That being said, he doesn’t really know what kind of stuff is out there for consuming. (His mum is savvy, no?) Well, actually, NO! At least, not anymore. He’s got eyes. He goes places. He’s starting to know things.
So, it was an MP3 player that he desired more than anything in this whole wide world. But, we decided to have him use a little bit of his own money to put towards it – I think this is fair, and it will hopefully lead him to take care of his things. Besides, the kid’s got cash – thanks to his grandparents, the tooth fairy, and some modelling he did years ago, the kid has more money than I do. *ahem* But really, it’s not as if it’s being saved for his education, or for, say, a car. He can spend some, right? Since he wants so! many! things! Especially lately. I hope this will make him more selective about his wishes.
We’ve negotiated downloading the iTunes and such. We can buy a few more every couple of weeks, if he writes down the titles he wants so he doesn’t forget. He’s got a little book solely for this purpose…
But his favourite so far is this tune, Pumped Up Kicks by Foster The People – it’s been around for a while, but now he’s got it in his very own ears. And he’s loving it. And he’s sharing with his sister… all I hear is the two of them wandering around the house, singing together. It’s especially hysterical when they get the words wrong, but I don’t have the heart to correct them. Everyone needs a “Hold me closer, Tony Danza…” moment to sit up and ponder one day, perhaps fifteen years after the fact. Heh.
All the other kids, with the pumped up kicks
you better run, better run, bring pasta to my brother…
Holy hell, that’s funny. Here’s the original, in case you don’t know it. It’s infectious. I dare you not to boogie…
Enjoy a splendid summer, people… it’s halfway gone already. Do it now. Do it all!

Um, Dynomite is OTHER song they sing together all the livelong day… holy crap.
It’s all gets tres pricey in a hurry… which makes it so much harder to buy e-readers and “The Hunger Games” series and whatnot for myself!! Ack.

My girl is hell bent on a DS and has been for a long time now, long enough i think I’m going to cave and get her one for xmas, even though by the time you buy the device and a game or two, it’s getting way up there.
meanwhile, her favourite song? Dynomite. I hear it ALL THE TIME. She seems to have sorted out the part where she used to sing “elactosaur like it’s dynomite” now, though, so that’s good.

Love this 🙂 They really are a couple of sweethearts. And I love that your son is writing down and making plans about spending his money. I’m totally going try that with my kids. Also? I can’t wait until my kids are old enough to explore music on their own. Right now, my son sings the refrain from “Life is a Highway” (aka The Cars Song) over, and over, and over with his three-year-old take on Rascal Flatts’ country twang. All day. ALL DAY. You know that thing you said about not enough drugs in the world? Yeah.

That song is on “replay”in our house this year. Or they’re singing it on the way to camp. Or in line at the grocery store. EVERYWHERE!! And maybe you can decide for yourself whether or not they’re cute. Maybe even tomorrow. Hee!!

I love that song too… they’re getting a MESS of song lyrics so wrong this summer… I’m killing myself laughing.
They are cute sometimes. You know, when they’re not making me want to kill them. 😉

LOVE that song! And love the pictures of your little lovelies loving it too 😉

Too funny! That is the one song that we are all enjoying in our family this summer. We had quite a debate about the lyrics when we first started hearing it on the radio, too, and my 6 year old daughter still sings,
“‘You better run, better run, faster than my puppet.” I like that imagery so much better than kids outrunning bullets!
That photo’s absolutely adorable, Tracey.
