You Want In The Family?? You’re In!

August 15, 2011 by Sara

I am truly fortunate to have all the help that I do with Will.  I’m not sure how any parents – single or not – do it without having options to get breaks.  It’s not just essential for you – I firmly believe it’s essential for your kids too!

This weekend, Will was with my friend Lindsay who generously offered to take him when I mentioned wanting to go up north to a party.  This was Will’s first night away with Lindsay…and frankly, I’m not sure who had the better time – him, Lindsay or me!!!
Here is our text message exchange from the weekend…it’ll give you a sense of what I’m talking about.  It will also give you an idea of how LUCKY I AM to have friends like this!

Lindsay – I’m keeping him.

Me – I love you.
L – Kinda wishing we were lesbians so we could raise him together.  Sadly, I don’t like girls.  Tragic, really.

Me – F*&% you kill me!
L – At Costco.  He wants everything.  And I will likely buy everything for him.  Kid owns me.  Oh here he is cleaning the pool.

M – Love!  How’s the swimmer.
L – Tired.  Big Time.  He just requested a nap so he’s lounging in his robe.  He also just ate two cupcakes, an ice cream cone and a full hot dog.  Bottomless pit.

M – So you’re still having fun?
L – Um yeah! My dad is so bloody happy.  The  man needs a grandchild.  Here they are at 6:36 pm – This could be bad for a very early morning.

M – That is the cutest thing ever.
L – Yes – so cute they are in love with each other.  Will calls him Lindsay’s Daddy to his face.

(random texts from drunken mother about very hot bass player from the band she was watching..too embarrassing to repeat)

L – Treehouse is a f$%(ing saviour!

(random texts from hungover mother about epic fail with hot bass player and potential barfing in Tim Horton’s parking lot)

M – Thanks for loving him and taking such good care of my boy.

L – Such a great weekend.  Seriously so awesome.  My parents are in love.  Now I’m super depressed and guilty for not giving them a grandkid yet.  He was wonderful and so hilarious.  I’m desperately trying to figure out how to become part of Will’s family.

FYI Lindsay – you ARE part of Will’s family.  And he and I are SO lucky to have such an amazing, supportive and hilarious extended family.  You’re awesome.

and no – you can’t have her phone number people.

OMG…that picture of Will w/ Lindsay’s dad is the sweetest photo ever posted! And her love for him and enjoyment of him rings through. The more people who love and enjoy our kids, the better! And you’re a better mom, i think, for taking some time away to refuel. It’s a win-win-win.

So awesome! My BFF and I used to always lament that we “didn’t roll that way” if you know what I mean. We wished we could just live on a compound with a bunch of women and children and raise each other’s kids and just have the men brought in from time-to-time for, well, you know. 😉

Sara, you get out and do way more as a single mom than I do with a husband! I admire the way you have built a great ‘extended family’ for Will, and use it for his benefit and yours.
