Many Canadians are lucky enough to be able to celebrate Family Day this February 16. It’s the perfect time for a holiday – mid-winter blahs are at their peak, and the period between Christmas and Easter is the longest stretch we have to endure without a holiday. So Family Day comes as a very welcome break!
In keeping with the spirit of the day, many families will plan to do something together. We’re contemplating our options in my family, but we’re definitely planning some kind of an outing. We’re considering skating on a pond near our house, taking a trip to the zoo or maybe paying a visit to the museum. Whatever we decide to do, one thing’s for certain: we’ll need to pack some snacks and drinks for ourselves and the kids.
With all of us taking a long, hard look at our wallets, one way to save money while still enjoying an outing is to bring your own snacks. The cafeterias and snack shops at family attractions are not only usually very over-priced, they also don’t always have very nutritious snacks on offer. So I’m a big fan of the bring-your-own-snack family outing.
This Family Day, wherever my family finds itself, we’ll be drinking Florida orange juice and munching homemade mini-muffins (perfect for those with smaller appetites – the grownups can have two) and fresh fruit. We tend to be a sort of fruit-obsessed household: my kids will more often reach for a snack from the fruit bowl than the pantry cupboard and frankly, I’m more than okay with that! We also tend to get obsessed with specific fruits for a month or so at a time, corresponding with their peak season. And February is grapefruit season, so our muffins will be accompanied by those big, pink, sweet Florida Grapefruit that we can’t get enough of right now! These are not the grapefruit you may remember being forced to eat as a kid – they are so pink and juicy and sweet that you can just peel and eat them like an orange. Which we all love to do!
Have a wonderful Family Day!
