As some of you know, my hubby & I have moved around a lot during our time together. Some people think that we’re crazy, but I can tell you that it has been a wonderful way to explore different parts of the country. You see different things when you live someplace as opposed to just visting.
The one thing that I am so grateful for is that with all of our moves we have been able to build some wonderful friendships. I worried when we moved back to California, because I was 7 & 1/2 months pregnant & not returning to work, that I would have very few confidantes out here who I could rely upon.
Boy was I ever wrong. As with most new moms I started to gravitate towards other new moms & my biggest opportunity for this was through a Hospital-sponsored weekly new-mom meeting. At first it was one of my only outings with my little guy. I used to just count the days until Wednesday, when the meeting was. We would sit around & chat about what we were feeling, what the babies were doing, occasionally bitch about our hubbies, & basically lift each other up when we needed it the most. I immediately bonded with 2 women who each had boys within 3 days of mine. We probably bonded at first because we were going through the same things at the same time, but as we were able to talk more about ourselves we realized how much we had in common. And frankly I realized just how much fun these 2 women were. I would have loved to have known them pre-babies, as I think that the 3 of us could have got into some serious trouble!! Oh well, there’s still time for that.
Anyway, back to the title of my post. These 2 girlfriends of mine & I were trying desperately to get some girl time in before the arrival of our newest little guy. We wanted to do something really girly & one of the ladies came up with high tea at this little English Tea-House. Sufficiently girly. Something the hubbies wouldn’t be caught dead doing. Sounded great to all of us. We were cutting it close but we planned it for April 20, a full 9 days before my due date. Well, needless to say, we jinxed ourselves as my water broke early in the morning on April 19 & our newest little guy arrived that afternoon.
I spoke to both of my girlfriends & lamented about the fact that I had ruined our High Tea. We all laughed & I told them to toast to me over cucumber sandwiches & scones.
The next day, while my hubby was visiting me in the hospital, there was a knock at the door & in strolled my two best girlfriends with silver tea service & full high tea. They had figured that if I couldn’t come out for some girl time that they would bring it to me. I about cried when I saw them. We talked, & laughed & I told them my latest labour story. Several nurses walked in to see what was going on, & each would smile as I told the story of how my 2 best girlfriends could have had a lovely relaxing lunch, but instead chose to drag all of this stuff down to a hospital so that I could be included in the celebration.
I have talked, laughed, cried, danced, spa-ed, celebrated birthdays, Mother’s Days & a few GNO’s with these girls & I can never express to them with mere words how grateful I am to have them in my life. My world is a better, happier, shinier place because of them.
I apologize for this post being a little off the topic of movies, but I really wanted to take the chance to share with you this story of great friends. And also, with a 2 week-old (& a 2 & 1/2 yr old) I haven’t had a lot of time to sit down & watch a movie!! It takes me ’til the weekend to watch Lost!!! Bear with me, I’ll be back to my (reasonably normal) Movie-Mommy self in no time!
