One of the drawbacks of working from home is the lack of contact and camraderie with my colleagues. Writing for Urbanmoms, I’ve gotten to know a fabulous group of people and fellow writers, but thus far it’s largely been a virtual relationship.
This past weekend in Blue Mountain, at Urban Blog Fest, those online friendships evolved into sweet, real relationships – and how wonderful that was! I had met some of the writers, but not everyone. However, it didn’t matter. Cumulatively, we shared a bond and an intimacy that was so profound and surprising. Our shared roles as parents, and as writers gave us so much commonality.
We were hosted by the Westin Blue Mountain, which was unbelievably fabulous! My heart nearly stopped when I walked into our gorgeous hotel room, which I shared with Vicki, whose blog Not So Supermom is hilarious by the way!
I could not properly fathom that the queen size Heavenly Bed replete with Egyptian cotton sheets and many pillows was all mine! Add that to the large immaculate bathroom, fuzzy robes and towels galore, and I was in heaven!
You see, this was the very first time I had ever left all three of my kids and gone anywhere. I am never, ever alone. I’ve almost forgotten what that’s like. I get the odd couple of hours or evening when my husband or babysitter takes over, but that’s it. Leaving home without my crew, I initally felt achy and sad. Guilty too – for what I don’t know. My husband is more than capable of taking great care of them, but it’s me who knows the subtle nuance of every whine and cry.
But, it was good to get away, be alone a little, and spend time with like-minded fun people! We bonded over delcious meals at Copper Blues and 3 Guys and a Stove, chatted in the pool and got the scoop on the latest happenings at Urbanmoms. As bloggers, we are engaged in the content and style of the site, but not so much in its inner workings. It was illuminating to learn more about the fantastic business side of Urbanmoms, and all the great stuff that Jen and Carol are doing and planning for the future.
While I was in Blue Mountain, I made numerous notes on aspects of the resort that appeal to young kids. Stay tuned for that post with lots of pics of our adventures!
