Dear Charlotte;
Today you are 18 and it is the first time since you were born that you did not wake up just close to me to have presents on my big bed.
It is as warm and sunny a day as the day we checked into the hospital. But when you were born 12 hours later you brought our first snowfall.It was a right amount of drama and beauty for the incredible moment your dad and I became parents. And just like you, with your love of winter, to bring it on for your arrival.
As I have said a million times – you taught me everything about being a mom. Motherhood made me into a better version of myself, taught me about what I could do and how I wanted to be. You have always made me look better at my favourite role, motherhood, than I really am. YOU are a spectacular human being.
There are many things that are not clear when your parents split up and you are not quite 12. But there is one thing I want to make very clear- you were born out of love. Your dad and I loved each other very much when we had you. Nothing can take that away.
You were so adored from day 1. I actually remember fighting over who would hold you or wake you after your nap. Your sweetness was almost unbearable. Nothing has changed. Life has only made you more beautiful.
Having you away at University has been a huge adjustment for all. We miss you filling up our daily lives with your essence but are so happy for you. And thankfully, it is true what they say- once in your life, always in your heart. Mostly, you don’t feel that far away because you are right in my heart always.
Happy Birthday, beautiful girl. 18 may sound old but don’t think childhood is over- just look at me. You are grown up in all the ways that count – so stay young.
I love you
Momma

That’s such a beautiful gift for your daughter, Nancy. Thanks for sharing it with all of us. I love the lines “Motherhood made me a better version of myself” and she “made you look better at your favourite role”. So wonderful that you can appreciate what a gift your daughter is to you!
