love is a merakle

February 14, 2011 by Nancy

heart.jpg

This week at Art Studio- the project was an oil pastel heart (orange, pink, red, silver, gold, pink) with a water colour wash of hot pink. Heaven in February.

The piece is given a title by each artist. They must fill in the blanks “LOVE IS…” I do this  every year and it feeds my soul. Sometimes funny, always touching, frequently illuminating.
This little guy, who is weekly a little disappointed that we aren’t doing something like a “papier mache volcano that erupts” tells me that this will be a present for his moms.

I want to hear more. Often, in this environment, I can teach the whole class about what family is and can be through sharing with them that I am divorced. They look up to me and like me- so it tends to give divorce a  face for them and a compassion. They see me as whole and my children as well. It is my chance to be ambassador to this unchartered territory, to maybe make them understand and not be afraid.
He says “I don’t have a dad. My two moms wanted to have a baby and so they asked a nice man. The nice man gave them a bottle with his sperm in it.”
I can’t help but picture a park bench with the three of them on it sharing something of life in a paper bag. The bench lets them not look at each other even thought this sharing makes them really kind of close.
I am touched by his outspokenness and the simplicity of his 8 year old explanation.
He finishes his work and gives it a title.
Love is a Merakle.
