Girls Night Out

September 11, 2009 by Jen

What I have realized over the last year or so is that there is something really special about spending one-on-one time with my children. Family time is great and seeing my kids have fun together is fabulous too but spending time with one of them alone is truly special. Like when my son and I took our trip to London and Paris. Or when my daughter and I went to Beaches in Turks and Caicos. I saw a side of each of them and had experiences with them that just wouldn’t have happened had we all been together.

This was proven true again last week when my daughter and I were lucky enough to get tickets to Cirque Du Soleil’s Ovo. In typical Cirque form this show was full of spectacular colours and costumes and awe inspiring talent. Seeing the show and the whole Big Top experience through my daughter’s eyes just made it that much more amazing. Her 6-year-old self was simply another character participating in the journey of the egg. The characters were not just people in costumes and she was completely transfixed. Instead of seeing a tightrope walker or people jumping on trampolines she was fully immersed in the story and performance. And because of that, so was I.

We got dressed up, shared lipgloss, held hands, and “ooooohed” and “ahhhhhhed” together. We munched popcorn and giggled and she fell asleep in my arms during the last 10 minutes. I loved being able to have that time on my own with her and I know it was very special for her to have me to herself. Being together as a family is the best but, every once in a while, I cherish having one-on-one time with each of my kids.

What a gorgeous pic of mom and daughter. Loved your post. I too had that same realisation when i traveled to ottawa this summer with only the Girl. Looks like a wonderful evening and what a fun event to take her to!

She is so gorgeous. And it is so fun to see things through their eyes. It opens us up to new ideas and parts of ourselves that we probably closed off years ago but is so fun and innocent.

I love going on “dates” with my kids, too! Looks like it was a really special evening for both of you 🙂
