between a rock and a hard place

July 9, 2010 by Nancy

miniheart3.pngWe took a helicopter ride up to the glacier in Alaska. We swooped and soared and investigated for over an hour and then landed on a glacier field. Our fabulously gorgeous pilot, Mike, guided us through the turquoise crevasses-warning us that the snow fields are deceiving and often only lightly cover deep holes that sink 60-100 feet from the surface.

He held each of us as we leaned over crevasses to peek down safely. All three generations of females in my family thought it would have been ok to die this way.
I found a heart shaped rock (I have a collection of these) and wanting to take a memory home of this other worldly  place, I went to put it in my pocket. Adorable pilot said “you are right, everyone needs a shark tooth shaped rock. “
I took it out of my pocket in the helicopter as its jagged edges were poking me in the sides. I then left it, in error, on the dash.
Later, beautiful pilot runs to fence like out of romantic movie shouting ‘ you forgot your shark’s tooth.’
I am pretty sure it is a heart.
