I love the Holiday Season. From the time I was a child I felt the warm glow of excitement bubbling well before December 1st. I would beg my mom to let me start playing Christmas Carols and decorating and spreading Holiday cheer. My sisters and I would plan, write lists, prepare menus and bake with our mom. We would drink eggnog and wrap ourselves in the warm glow of Holiday planning and the anticipation of parties and presents and family and friends. This was my favourite time of the year.
And now I see this joy in my own children. The Holiday parties and food and festivities. The gathering of family. The traditions. What a magical time!
But this time is not magical for everyone. There are so many things we take for granted that others simply can’t afford. As we revel in our gifts and feasts others are denied even the simple basics. So this year UrbanMoms is going to do something about it! We have reached out and adopted 5 sisters who have spent their entire lives separated in foster care and have never shared a happy Holiday season together.
When I saw what these girls had on their Wish List I was so humbled and, honestly, I was ashamed. As I planned for a Holiday season filled with fine wine, expensive gifts, and extended family, these 5 sisters wanted only to be together. Their list included plates, cutlery, a table and chairs, a Christmas tree, and food. The very basics that most of us take for granted. The simple things we rarely even acknowledge. That is all these girls wanted.
So, this Holiday Season we, at UrbanMoms, will give them that. We will give them the gift of a Christmas dinner together with a tree with all the trimmings and a feast like no other. Because everyone deserves a chance to share the season with those they love without having to worry about how you will afford to feed them.
