There is so much fascinating information out there in cyberspace, sometimes it’s hard to keep it manageable. That’s why I enjoy Sunday Surf posts on other blogs that I read. If I’m reading someone’s blog regularly, we obviously have some things and common and I’m likely to enjoy some of the websites that they do.
So I figured, if you’re reading my blog regularly, we also have some things in common so I’d like to share some sites that I’ve been enjoying lately. I’m going to split today’s offering into two categories: multiples & education. I’m always thinking about both.
Multiples
I have to start with Multiple Births Canada. It’s the national support organization for multiple birth families in Canada. It has information for families about multiple pregnancy, delivery, breastfeeding, etc. It also has links to local chapter websites, where the real life support comes from.
Since I’m a “little bit crunchy”, I like Naturally Parenting Twins. It has good information on natural pregnancy, delivery, breastfeeding, attachment parenting multiples (I know, I know, labels, labels…but sometimes they are helpful), babywearing with multiples and more.
Again because of my “crunchy” side, I love the Mothering Magazine website, and especially, forums (forii??? Kath???). It’s not about multiples but there is a sub-forum on parenting multiples. I love to communicate directly with other parents.
I discovered Intrepid Murmurings when I participated in the November Carnival of Natural Parenting. It’s written by Kristin, a twin Mom from Seattle. Although not all posts are about twins, I enjoy all of her posts which cover a variety of topics (much like my blog). She has some great activities to do with toddlers/preschoolers.
Karen Kerkoff Gromada’s book Mothering Multiples, published by La Leche League, is a must read for expectant and new mothers of multiples. Her website, is also very informative. I met Karen a few years ago at the MBC conference in Markham. I also was lucky enough to have found the Yahoo Group, Attachment Parenting Multiples, where she is a very active and supportive member.
There are many, many more sites I could include, but we have many more Sunday Surfs to come so I will save them for another Sunday morning.
Education
If you’ve read my previous posts about unschooling and school, you will know I am passionate about education. I’m always thinking about it and how to improve it, how kids learn, how to engage children in their learning, etc. Here are a few recent posts/sites that have inspired me.
This one is a TED talk about math by Conrad Wolfman. I’ve been fascinated with teaching math for the last six years. I recently finished my specialist in primary/junior math and I’m always looking for ways to improve my math practice. BTW, I was NOT a math person in school, once I got to high school, I really struggled. I think that’s because the teaching was rote and I didn’t develop a good conceptual understanding. That is what I don’t want to have to my students so I’m working hard to make sure it doesn’t.
Here’s another great math video. This one is grade 6 (Yup, grade 6, astonishing) students at the Calgary Science discussing an solving the question “Are there enough trees in the Boreal forest to be the lungs of the earth?” A MAZING!
Boreal Math (Student Discussion) from Calgary Science School on Vimeo.
And finally (for now), a very comprehensive list of FREE internet resources for education. This one speaks for itself.
Happy Surfing.
