Have you heard the news? The month of May is Mental Illness Awareness Month and as a mom of eight children – two of them suffer from mental illness I have always been an advocate for my children, but now I must hurry before time runs out!
Mental illness is a silent disability affecting millions of children worldwide. Although we may rarely fully understand it, it is so important to speak out for these children. Do what you can to help. Send letters to our Government, listen to our children and become aware and educated – not ignorant. Children affected by mental illness can’t always express how they feel, but they are bright children with many thoughts and feelings. Listen with your heart to what goes on in their minds and spread the word before their time runs out…..
Hopelessness, alone, conflict, social disability, friendless, angry, waitlists, abuse, meltdowns, psychosis, worthless, suicidal, comorbidity, cycling, manic, depressed, rages, withdrawl, avoidance, delusions, obsessive behaviour, paranoia, bullying, self-mutilating, racing thoughts, hoarding, humiliated, learning disabilities, blood, gore, hypersexuality, treatment, diagnosis, medication, hospitals, overwhelming, intervention, separation anxiety, fear, nightmares, irritability, extreme sensitivity, hyper-active, giddy, rejected, intolerant, demanding, explosive, creative, defiant, violent, decreased initiative, frantic, therapy, money, Bipolar, Mood swings, racing thoughts, darkness, tunnels, lithium, risperadal, chronic, sleepiness, confusion, slurred speech, valium, ADHD, broken, pain, silence, loser, cutting, knives, drug use, alcoholism, genetics, grim, no treatment plans, lack of treatment, lack of funding, disbelief, hallucinations, guilt, shame, self-critical, punishment, schizophrenic, complex, life, death……..
Is this what you would want for your child?
Stop the silence.
Stop the ignorance.
Help those with the silent killer…. mental illness.
Until Next time,

Kath it is so true – these children do not get the help they are so in need of. The waitlists are crazy and they are constantly (the children) shipped back and forth to specialists because not too many want to admit the truth. As parents we are often the ones blamed. Sad as that is.

Chantel, I too have a child who suffers from mental illness. Thank you for helping to put their pain and turmoil into words – this is a very important issue, but one still so mired in stigma that these children don’t get the awareness, care and treatment they need and deserve. And parents of kids with mental illness (who are often very challenging to parent) don’t get the support they need in order to properly support their children. We can only make this problem better by breaking the silence!
