Last night was one of those perfect summer nights. The air was calm and warm, filled with the sounds of basketballs bouncing. Kids shouting. Counting. Laughing.
Once again I was so completely grateful that we found this house on this street, where there is never a shortage of friends to play with.
Last night – all of the neighbourhood kids were out and there was a kickass game of hide & seek happening. I sat on the porch feeling pure contentment.
I looked at my watch – it was 8:30. Woops.

I like to have Eva in bed between 7:30-8:00pm
Cuyler between 8:00-8:30pm and Campbell between 8:30-9:00pm

Weekends they can stay up later…10ish or so. Sometimes if we’re out visiting, it’s midnight or later.
And now we have summer approaching…that means my down time at night gets significantly minimized with their later bedtimes.
Last night I let them stay up later. Stay out later. On a school night no less. I just hated to bring them in and miss out on a perfect summer night.
Everyone else was out. It was a beautiful night. It’s the last week of school. So I gave them an early start to summer. With the promise that they would all be in bed by 8:30 tomorrow night. We’ll see how that goes…
Thursday is the last day of school. I have 3 more regular bedtimes before they get tossed out for our crazy summer routine.

Do you let your kids stay up later during the summer months? How do you handle summer bedtimes?
More importantly – how do you deal with the fight that naturally occurs every night while you’re dragging your kids in at 9pm and the rest of the street is still out?

Ah yes! The neighbours have four kids (three boys), a trampoline and no summer bedtime. I won’t even try…So far it means 7 pm bedtime is now 8pm. Not a big deal but it takes some tricks.
We put the fan on to reduce the kid noise and blackout blind down(my favourite purchase EVER). It really helps. For our cross country camping adventure we’ll just need to see. I’m not the “go with it”kinda gal, so again, we’ll see…
In BC we are just seeing the sun for the first time since, like, October so, yeah, summer nights can last FOREVER.

Oh my word, woman – I SO KNOW!! I have to say the worst part is how their later bedtime encroaches on my downtime in the evenings… it makes the short time that Martin and I have together ever shorter. Harrumpf.
But, if I have to say YES to more things (and try to fight/wrestle/nag less,) then the later bedtime is the way to go. (I have WEEPING children in their beds when they hear the other kids still playing outside… oy, it’s going to be a long summer…) But, at least we have slightly later, less-hurried mornings for a change!
Your kids are too cute, Christine!!

I was always the one calling my kids in early for bed while the rest of the street stayed outside to play……now that they are older, I decide day by day what time they go to bed (during the summer) depending on what we did that day AND depending on our plans for the next day. Generally my little ones go to bed around 9:30 on weekends so this will be a guideline for the summer as well. The older two, well let’s just say, I am in bed LOOOONG before they are!!
