Star Wars Newbies

January 13, 2014 by Sara 5 Comments

When I first decided to have a baby on my own, I had some concerns.

How would I pay for this? Could I handle parenting alone? Would my child resent me for this decision that I made?

Then when I found out I was having a boy (YES!) there were many, many things that concerned me.

a. Who would teach him to pee standing up? (answer…himself but he doesn’t love it…:)).

b. How would he learn to shave? Is the face like the legs?

c. Jock strap? No idea. You get the idea.

So many concerns, offset by the burning desire to have this kid. So I moved forward. I had him. And now at age five years and 6 months…I’ve encountered what the biggest concern should have been all along.

Who in GODS NAME would teach this kid about Star Wars??

It’s upon us. Yoda (is he a good guy)? The name of a a black robed, ugly faced dude? Is Darth Vader good or bad? I HAVE NO IDEA!!!! I had an idea how to pee standing up. I did. But I have no idea who the force is supposed to be with!

Yup...this is me.

Yup…this is me.

He’s peppering me with questions….and I have no answers. Do you? Scooby Doo? I had that. Please. Seen ’em all. Star Wars. Nope. Saw the first movie once a hundred years ago.

I need to call an old friend. It came to me today that when I was dating his roommate, he got a box of his childhood toys from his mom and it was stacked with Star Wars stuff. The two of them were dying with excitement. Yup. I need to call him and get a prep course.

I did a get a ‘whoa, mom, nice’ for knowing 3CPO today! But I can’t keep this charade up for long.

So Star Wars. Any tips? Can he watch it yet? God…can I sit through it?

There are a few little readers about the basic story that are a good crash course and good for shared reading on his current favourite subject (these are from DK), but here are a few tips:
    – red light sabers = Sith Lords = bad guys
    – blue or green light sabers = Jedi = good guys – and one of them has a purple one
    – Lego Star Wars is a better entry point, because violence is all minifig on minifig and there’s some humour – we are making my 5-year-old Star Wars-obsessed guy wait for a few years until he sees the movie, they are a bit much for this age, I think.

May the force be with you!

Alice – I had NO IDEA there were different coloured light sabers! Whoa…. yes. he is loving the Star Wars lego as well. Maybe I’ll just try and slow him down with that one.

He will learn it from his friends. Noah now knows more about Star Wars than I do. Also, just a heads up … Beware of Lego Star Wars.
