words for wednesday-paddle your own canoe

July 9, 2013 by Nancy Leave a Comment

I have long loved this phrase. It means what you know it does- be strong, be independent, follow your own path, be yourself.

We started art camp with the question “what is your most cherished trait?” Mine is two because choosing is  hard  and, well, it’s my game, so I make the rules- my resourcefullness and my sense of humour. They both serve me every day.

And these 8 and 10 year olds came up with their word and incorporated it into their art project.

One little one said ” I don’t know what I am good at”  ” I don’t know my cherished trait”. Great opportunity for everyone to tell her- who doesn’t love being told what is unique and good and lovely  about themselves?

They said many things but she chose loyal. I like loyal. It is worth repeating.

“Paddle your own canoe”- not always the easiest or smoothest journey but the one you are meant to be on.
