I spent two years living in Australia. While I was there I saw my fair share of natural disasters—floods and fires happened every now and then, and extreme heat warnings were no joke. But no matter the time of year or where I happened to be in the country, water conservation was always at the top of everyone’s minds. Drought was a real and ever-present danger.
Lakes and rivers that used to run freely were drying up; I had friends who actually showered with buckets at their feet to be able to water their gardens; and the idea of leaving the water running when I brushed my teeth was unheard of.
Fast-forward to my life here in Canada and I can honestly say that I am not as conscious of my water usage as I used to be while living down under. And why is that? Because here at home I haven’t been affected by drought the way I was in Australia. Here’s the thing, while I may not think Canada is short on water, these global water shortages are already catching up with the whole world. We need to be aware of what is going on outside our own country and how those changes can and will eventually affect us too.
Did you know that on average, Canadians who leave the water running while they brush their teeth waste up to 15 litres of water? Fifteen litres! That is a crazy amount of waste. If we wasted that much milk or juice twice a day, people would be furious. But since it’s “just water” most people don’t even notice that they are being wasteful as the tap is running.
Colgate wants us to realize the importance of water conservation and help us all to do our part to save water. Colgate is aiming to help us all realize that #EveryDropCounts [Colgate.com/EveryDropCounts]—they’ve even created the Save Water logo which will appear on the back of product packaging to serve as a simple reminder to turn off the faucet.
Since 2013, Colgate has been promoting water conservation awareness—they have reached an estimated 999 million people with their message of preservation and protection of the world water supply.
And now they are looking to each one of us to help spread the message about the importance of water conservation—especially when it comes to brushing our teeth.
It’s easy to get involved and conserve water. Just turn off your faucet when you’re brushing your teeth. Encourage your kids to do the same and educate them as to why it’s so important.
You can even make a personal pledge online to save water by using #EveryDropCounts on social media to signify the 15 litres of water you’re saving just by keeping the faucet off while you brush your teeth.
As one person in the world, it often feels like there isn’t much we can do to make an impact, to effect change, to really make a difference. But with Colgate’s Save Water campaign, you can make a measureable difference—you can make a 15 litre difference and show that #EveryDropCounts.
