The power of silence.

April 15, 2013 by Sonya 1 Comment

Can you stay silent for 24 hours? Do you think you can try?

Last year, my sons did this at school. Well, actually the older one who was twelve years old then, committed to the full 24 hours while the younger one followed his school and did it for an hour or so. It was pretty moving on both counts regardless. I remember visiting the school when they had started. All the kids were outdoors and not a peep was heard. It was a remarkable and bone chilling moment to see 700+ kids quiet.
This Thursday, April 18th we’re going to do it all over again. Why?
Over 100,000 youth across North America will be standing in solidarity for children around the world who are silenced by poverty and exploitation in Free the Children’s ninth annual WE ARE SILENT CAMPAIGN.
This is one of Free the Children’s most powerful annual fund and awareness campaigns (formerly known as the Vow of Silence). While silent, kids (who are old enough) are encouraged to take to social media to help raise awareness and amplify the message on Facebook and Twitter using #WeAreSilent
So, if you’re wondering why your kids are quiet (or trying to be) on Thursday. This is why. Let’s support them.
For more information visitwww.freethechildren.com
Numerous celebrities and public figures will be joining in, will you?

I love it and if I wasn’t working I would. I went on vacation by myself once and was essentially silent for 6 days…it was heavenly.
