When I’m out and about, I like to seek out (or stumble upon) hidden gems. I’m not sure if it’s my upbringing to go for the less obvious. Case in point? During Fashion Week, I was invited to attend the Toronto Fashion Incubator’s Press and Industry Brunch where there was the opportunity to meet with some emerging designers and perhaps lesser known labels that are no-less deserving of attention. I realize it takes a lot of financial backing to put on one of the big runway shows during the week-long event (and then the after parties) so this event was a great venue to discovers some new names and a few definitely caught my attention.
Mayana Geneviere is a line of intimates created with fashion and functionality. Founder Nadine Woods introduced me to her line designed with the new mom in mind. The line offers comfort and support without looking blah. I agreed with her that while we are in this stage of life, sometimes, just that extra little detailing helps us feel more confident and maybe even “roar” a little.
I had the opportunity to interview Nadine about life and her line that is soon to launch.
Why did you start this line of under garments?
I was frustrated with what was available on the market! With my daughter being my first child, I did a lot of preparing for her arrival and was not aware of what my recovery process would entail. Once I got in the thick of the postnatal phase I was faced with the challenges of breastfeeding and really understood the value of a good nursing bra. I was also faced with wearing shapewear for the first time out of necessity; I didn’t like the feeling of loose skin/organs and a tummy that wasn’t supported. I realized what I needed from my undergarments was not something readily available on the market. Garments that were available were either not truly conducive to the needs postnatal body, or, were not fashionable and most times did not give me a flattering shape under clothing. I ended up choosing different pieces from a multitude of global brands and found myself recreating elements of each piece so that it functioned for my needs. Only after speaking to my friends, peers and other moms, that I realized I wasn’t alone. Fascinated by my ideas a few friends began to follow my lead with their existing lingerie. I thought, women deserve better, and I’m going to make sure they get it!
What should women know when it comes to shopping for undergarments?
Underwear is often underestimated. Most of us forget our underwear serves as an important foundation in our everyday wardrobe. We learn so much about our body and its function, especially once we have children, support and comfort are equally as important as the aesthetics of any garment. Getting fitted properly is so crucial – the correct bra can make a huge difference in your posture to improving alignment, breathing, breast health and of course how your clothes fit! Buying at least two to three bras allows you to have staple pieces on rotation (one wash, one wear) especially when breastfeeding.
When it comes to bottoms, comfort and breathability are key. The correct size and style of panties and shapewear are a great way to support your body and enhance your beautiful figure.
Intimate apparel can gravely affect the shape of your body, creating a flattering or frumpy look. Spend some time investing in getting to know your correct size, what feels good and looks good on you. Your assets are worth it!

I was interested in your modern day corset – can you tell us about it?
The all-in-one waist cincher is our feature shapewear garment. It is designed to give women support, control and shaping simultaneously – double tummy control! A lot of postpartum garments available can be bulky due to the necessity of having to layer them on top of existing undergarments. Having the built-in corset minimizes shifting for a smoother, more comfortable feel. We’ve added the beautiful lace detail over the corset to add that element of luxury while shaping.
What are some of the favourites in your line?
That’s difficult! I designed each piece for the different stages and needs of a postnatal woman. Definitely the demi wire bras and the all-in-one waist cincher – in terms of fashion and function hands down these are both great pieces for that extra control and luxurious feel. I am very partial to the thong shapewear, it’s a high-waisted control that looks great under clothes and by itself. The plunge cut and sew bras are incredibly sexy and comfortable. I continue to wear those along with the control panties today, they fit well plus they give that extra control on those days when you’re not feeling your best. The pieces look great on all shapes and sizes so it’s really about personal preference.
Anything special for the holidays?
We are getting ready to celebrate our first Christmas in our new home so for that we are grateful and excited. My daughter has just reached the age where she understands Santa Claus is coming! We are looking forward to spending some time doing holiday decorating, and baking with her now that she can participate in all the fun and care that goes into making the holiday season magical and memorable!

Nadine/Mayana Geneviere is at the forefront of what I believe will have postnatal women (and others!) crashing the doors of stores who sell her merchandise. I know Nadine has research this line for a few years now and has spent innumerable hours agonizing over every little detail. Kudos, Nadine! I am really looking forward to the official launch of your line, and being able to refer clients so they, too, can look and feel their best postpartum!
