While out running errands earlier today, a cashier handed me my bag of goods and said, “You have a lovely day!” And then I wished her a lovely day in return, and I left the store smiling to myself…
There’s a huge difference between that, and snatching up your stuff and mumbling, “Thanks…” to a person, not even being thankful at all. Not even making eye contact with another person. It made me smile because it’s such a simple wish to bestow on another, and it feels nice to be on the receiving end – especially when someone is looking you in the eye.
And it takes no time or special skills… just turn to a person near you, and send that small wish out into the air for them. Wishes are live things. And they’re good things.
To me, this list is just part and parcel of being the best version of yourself as you can. Lovely is staying connected to people around you in ways that can’t always be counted. To be courteous. Put your best foot forward. Even if you don’t do all of the items on the list every single day, one should try. Compliment people. Be kind. Smile. BE lovely.
If you just can’t bring yourself to compliment a stranger (and really, you should try it sometime) it doesn’t rule out being lovely to the people nearer and dearer to you. I think it means even more when you’re specific, and can tell people why you love them. Or get out your paper and your ink and send a letter saying, “Hey.” Small gestures like these often mean the world to the one who gets to heed your words… and it makes the teller feel good, too. In my books, that’s a win-win.
Of course this goes for today, and for Valentine’s Day, and for Saturday, and for Tuesday…
It’s a lifestyle thing. It’s for everyday.
PS – A little perfume never hurt anyone… nor did telling someone they smell nice, either.
Gee, you’re looking gorgeous today, Internets – I love what you’ve done with your hair…

I like the “Be Charming” part best. Most often when folks ask “How are you?” I usually answer “Excellent”. They usually react in shock, I guess cause most say “fine” or “okay”. But my answer usually puts a little pep in their smile. I shall now start to answer “Charming”. That’s different. Thanks.

It really is the little things, isn’t it? Smile-spreading stuff is the best stuff there is. 🙂

This happened to me today too!! It was almost like the lady made me wait to hear her complete sentence, it seemed odd to me at the time, but as I walked away I got it. So simple!!
