I’m watching the news (late meeting) and up pops the stat that fifteen years ago Lady Di died. Whoa. Cue tears.
I loved Lady Diana. And thinking about her dying brings such a wash of emotion and memories. When I heard the news I was at a hostel in Greece. The Pink Palace. Ever been? I was WAY too old to be there. My days of naked volleyball had long passed. I went to a phone booth to call my mom and she told me the news. I went and got a bottle of wine and sat at the beach. I was truly sad – for her, for her boys.
Down walked two, also past the naked volleyball, Kiwi chicks. They were also sad. We bonded. And that started a three-week trip through Greece together. It was incredible. We’ve stayed in touch ever since and one of them has come to Canada multiple times to visit. It was special.
My mom loved Lady Di as well. She and I waited for hours in Ottawa to get a glimpse of she and Chuck when they visited. We actually got to shake both their hands and Charles talked to me. It’s an amazingly special memory that I have of my mom. I loved when we were driving home and we heard the annoying mom and daughter who stood next to us for all those hours being interviewed on the radio. The mom said, “Charles actually spoke to my daughter. He asked if it was always this hot in Canada.” My mom lost it. “WHAT. ARE YOU KIDDING ME. He said that to you.” She was steamed. I can still hear her.
All these years later, I share something with Will and Harry (umm not what I’d like to…:)). We are all motherless. I heard Will being interviewed at how much he wishes his mom could have met Kate. Do I get that. I bet she would have loved her.
So. Are you a royal lover? Where were you when you heard that Lady Di died???

I am a Royal family fan! Oh, it’s sad to think it’s 15 years ago already. Diana was so lovely, beautiful, and adored her sons. You can certainly see her love for life through her sons! My husband and I were with another couple camping in Algonquin park that weekend and didn’t know about the fatal accident until we got back to our car and someone told us then – it didn’t seem real. And yes, the funeral was very sad.

I was home when that news came… and suddenly Tom Cruise was on the CNN telephone, yammering about how he’s been chased by paparazzi in that tunnel too, blah, blah, blah… I was stunned for the rest of the night. Very, very sad.
She seemed like such a lovely, shy person – the scrutiny of her life-in-public seemed more than she could bear, anyway… I was terribly sad for her boys. The funeral just killed me.
