Okay, that title is a tad facetious – I’m not really a wino. But I’m working on it. I wish I DID order my wine by the crate! No, no… but the crates I have were simply procured from a pile set for the trash sometime last year. I had dreams of putting casters on the bottoms of them… or for storing something excellent in them. Or something. I guess I’ve been saving them for an I don’t know what yet, but I’ll get to it eventually so don’t look at me like I’m a hoarder ’cause you know I’m not kind of scenario. Sometimes you just don’t have a need for things, but you know you will one day. And yesterday was the day.
You see, Ava Scarlett is to get a new baby doll from Santa for Christmas (I know, because he and I have chatted about it) and let me tell you, those wee plastic bebes are pricey enough in their own right. I mean, for a 12 inch rubbery doll with eyes that close, wearing a frilly pink dress of some kind? You’ve got to be kidding me with this price…
And as I considered the idea of a little doll’s bed to go with, what I saw online consisted mostly of cheap plastic pink-on-more-pink doll-house-y crap, with hefty price tags attached. I mean, a doll’s bed shouldn’t cost as much as a human’s bed, you know? Not only am I not prepared to spend the kinds of monies associated with such items, but I cannot bear to look at offensive, pink, girly crap in my house. I just can’t.
Enter the wine crate.
Yesterday, I skipped downtown with my visiting mother, and we stopped into a fabric store for a bit of foam and a little bit of grey fleece backed with cream. (You can cut the stuff, and the edges don’t even fray.) I had some left over remnants of sheeting fabric from long-ago projects, so with my silly glue gun all poised and ready, we whipped up this adorable bit of bedding…
Go to sleep… go to sleep… go to sleep plas-tic bay-bees…
It has a mattress covered in sheeting, this adorable blanket, and this little pillow, which is grey on one side, and cream on the other. And this little bed is probably roomy enough for two baby dolls! It’s tres lo-fi, but I can dig it. And I’m kind of high-fiving myself right now.
I don’t really bake, knit, or sew, so there’s a limit to the kinds of D.I.Y. stuff I can come up with (I can only organise and decorate the hell out of things) but I do love the almost-vintage feel this wee bed. I’m not even going to wrap it – I’ll just stick it under the tree for her to find on Christmas morning.
Man, I hope she loves it.
I’m jealous of those with skills for making things… are you one of those? What do you make with your own two hands for the holidays?!

I’ve been singing it all day, Julie… and it’s wine-o’clock right now, so by all means – sing along with me. *snort*
