My kids share a bedroom. They’re small still, so I’m riding out this arrangement for as long as humanly possible. Especially since we recently claimed the last available room in the house for ourselves, for a sexy dressing room. (I swoon as I type this.)
Well, it’s my house, and I was here first, dammit. Children: go buy your own house.
Anyway, I’m not into matchy-matchy decor – I never have been. I don’t care for Disney-themed things like wallpaper or sheets (or jammies!) so finding items that suit a room for both a he and a she can be tricky.
But while we were having our house painted a few months back, I found a wall stencil I thought might be good. I don’t have much experience with such things, but I’ve been browsing over scores and scores (and scores) of images, and thought perhaps what I found might suit.
I wanted something that would look kinda cool. And it had to be a bit unexpected. And delightful. And non-babyish. And after all the recent news of masses-of-birds-dropping-out-of-the-sky, I remembered that I’d stashed it until after the paint had properly cured…
The package came with the tree in a large centre strip (first the trunk, and then the branches) and then separate sheets of branches and birds to be added as one sees fit. I decided to go with a less-is-more approach. I think it worked!!
I love that you can see it from inside their room, but not from the hallway – not that it would be bad, but with our long and narrow house, every room is on display… there’s lots of stuff to look at from every angle, you know? This is better.
I also re-hung a piece my son loves very much. I think it’s a great trick hanging artwork at bed-level, especially with bunk beds – it differentiates the sleeping spaces a little bit more, and can allow for some individuality in a shared space.
(I have some “femme” pieces to frame and hang at Ava Scarlett’s level – pics to to come later. You know, when I’ve actually done something about them.)
Fortunately, the kids love it all too!! But more importantly, I love it. After all, it’s my house… heh.
Decorating? Doing stuff?! I love the January projects… share, if you’ve got ’em!!

Where did you get this fantastic decal? I LOVE it! 🙂
Sara says
oh sister – we spent Tuesday night there trying out all the beds!!!
Tracey says
Sara, you can’t tell from this pic, but there are 2 drawers on casters under the bed as well – Ikea is a magical place, I tell you!!
Sara says
ooh I love it so much….and I love bunks…I plan on having them just for sleepovers for the boy….
Tracey says
Bunks work pretty well for us, Sarah, at least, so far. They’re four years apart in age. It won’t last forever, but we have some years. They like being together, so far…
And sure, I’ll show you the other stuff as I get to it! I want some shallow ledges by the window… soon!

I’ve never been able to have characters on walls or bedding (or even clothes/shoes for that matter)
Oh I think that is the prettiest wall stencil I’ve ever seen. And meets all of your criteria for a shared unisex bedroom.
LOVE it!!
(and your exquisite baseboards!)

I adore your taste. Please, send me pictures of your entire house (or blog them) so I can copy when I move into my new place? PLEASE?
ps- I’m thinking bunk beds for my kids too when they’re a bit older. Just seems like the right move…
Tracey says
Thanks so much, ladies!! Ava Scarlett said,”Look mummy! They’re flying down!!” She was napping IN HER BED while I completed the project. (Yeah, my kids can sleep through anything.)
And yes please, Nancy – wanna see pics of your art space… right now!!

I love it! I especially love the little birds perched on the top of the door and flying down. Makes it really come to life.
