This weekend my family celebrated one of our favorite holidays. Saturday night we gathered with friends for our annual Ground Hog’s Day party.
Yes, you read that right, Ground Hog’s Day.
When my mom and dad were first married they had an annual Christmas party for all of their friends. As the years passed and people started families of their own it got harder and harder to find a time that worked for everyone.
That’s when my dad decided it was time to move the party. He chose the next holiday on the calendar, which happened to be Ground Hog’s Day.
Over the years the party has grown and evolved and these days it’s more like a neighborhood block party. There are no formal invitations and everyone is welcome. My dad cooks a pig and everyone brings a dish to share. Every year the crowd is a little different but we always have a good time.
This year was the first year that I got to bring my own children to the party and I must say that they enjoyed themselves immensely. Katelyn was passed around and ogled by all of the ladies (and even some men) and Chase got to play with the gaggle of children present (Please note the thick layer of dirt covering his pants, he had a really good time).
So as weird as it is to say, Ground Hog’s Day is definitely one of my favorite holidays. What’s your favorite non-traditional holiday?

How fun, Jen!! And yes, your little dude looks like he has PLENTY of fun!!
Ground Hog’s Day is actually my son’s birthday (Oliver Chase!) but, we haven’t celebrated other non-holidays. I’m thinking that given that both my kids have winter birthdays, I might start celebrating their half-birthdays, which would be during the summer months, so we can host more kids OUTSIDE of the house. That would be swell for me…!

this idea is a really great one. we are really blessed here to have a small enough family that we can get together but with the cousins all growing up it’s harder. we just do one birthday for everyone at thanksgiving and we’re good.
it’s only a day, after all. any day, holiday or not, can be great when the whole family is there.
