I spend a lot of time in front of the computer and on my mobile devices. It has become a way of life. While computers and screens have made us more efficient in many ways—we can respond faster and more efficiently—studies have shown that prolonged sitting in front of the devices is not healthy for us. It’s encouraging many of us have a more sedentary lifestyle.
But if you’re like me, and find yourself in front of the computer for hours, then listen up! Staying put has been scientifically and medically lined to an increase in cardiovascular disease, diabetes and cancer. While you’re getting what you need done, you’re not doing your body any favours.
So, what can you do? I was recently introduced to the WalkTop by Canadian company Fitneff. The concept is relatively simply yet having seen the product, there’s definitely more to it than being a tabletop workspace for your treadmill.
What is it? The WalkTop is device that attaches to any treadmill. It offers an ergonomically designed workable space so you can continue movement while you’re keeping up with your work.
This doesn’t mean that you can run on your treadmill while doing work. Let’s face it, when you’re running or training, you should really concentrate on that and give it your all. The WalkTop is not meant to replace your daily exercise regime but it is meant to offer you a safe environment to just keep you moving.
I admit that I was definitely interested in this device being a work at home mom but I could definitely see this in offices as well. The WalkTop is adjustable and portable so you only need one in your space. It’s been recommended to go no more than the speed of 2 miles per hour—again, it’s not going to replace a full work out, but it is a safe speed to keep you moving.
I do go for walks each day to take the kid to school and I know that walking is great for stress relief. I’m constantly telling myself to just “breathe” and “walk it off”—this just gives me more opportunity! I completely lost track of time on the treadmill and found myself easily walking while working and getting stuff done!
