Pantone’s Colour of The Year: Yay or Nay?

May 7, 2013 by thenest 2 Comments

Do you follow home decor trends? I do. I LOVE reading home decor magazines and taking bits of inspiration into my own home in small ways. This year, Pantone announced the colour of the year for 2013  is Emerald Green. I have to admit….I was not inspired. I haven’t decorated in large doses of green since the forest green trend of the 1990’s. But here’s the thing….trends are just that….trends. Trends represent what is popular at any given time….whether it be fashion, technology or sofa colours. But when it comes to our home….I vote for comfort and personal taste any day over a trend that does not represent our family. However, I did a little research to see if there were ways that one could incorporate some emerald green into a home without a big investment of money or sacrifice in comfort.
The easiest way to incorporate any trend into a home is with a simple pillow.  I love this white graphic print on emerald green, and this look could work for a living room sofa, a bed or a patio set.

Another way to incorporate a trend into a home is with glassware. I love this collection of vases adorned with simple greenery. And often, coloured glassware is easy to find in second hand stores for a budget friendly option.

Another way to build a trend into home decor is to take existing pieces, such as vases , and spray paint them in a new colour scheme to give them new life. Other pieces that are easy to paint are: side tables, lamp bases, chairs….and almost anything!
This is the method I use most often to incorporate a bit of a trendy colour into our humble abode.

How about you? When it comes to trends in home decor, are you are an ‘early adopter’, a follower, or do you break the trend and stay the course with your own taste & style?
As for me, I am still mulling over a bit of emerald green somewhere in this house.

I love to hear about this stuff and so glad you will keep me posted Angie. I generally march to my own drummer breaking every rule possible – green is beautiful and alive but my favourite green is a little more lime -like the buds on the mature trees in my neighbourhood that splash against the blue sky these days. That I love!

I LOVE decor magazines, too… too much, actually. I’m not a slave to trends of any kind, but when I like one, I do try to incorporate it in little ways like you described – a pillow, or a vase or something… but emerald green isn’t one of my faves. I think I’ll let this one slide on by. 🙂
